particularly a device for burning gas in gas heaters.
One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide a gas burning device in which a secondary air supply is provided and in which such secondary air supply is regulated in a simple and eflicient manner in proportion to the amount of gas being supplied to the burner.
A further object of my invention is to provide means whereby a secondary air supply is introduced to the burner about the tips of the burner.
A further object of my invention is to provide means whereby the flame from the burner is broken up and deflected in such a manner as to complete the combustion of the flame.
Further objects and advantages will appear hereinafter from the following specification and drawings.

11 indicates the outer wall or shell of the gas furnace and 12 the inner shell, the outer shell being provided with outlet-s 13 to which connections are made for conducting the heated air from the outer chamber 14 to the rooms to be heated, such air entering the chamber 14 through openings 15 formed in the lower part of the shell 11, the air passing through tubes 16 which extend through the inner or heat chamber 17. 18 designates a stack for the chamber 17 and 19 designates a deflector arranged below the stack 18 to prevent the heat traveling directly from the burner to the stack but causing the heat to travel about the tubes 16 in the chamber 17.
2O designates a circular fire pot in open communication with the heat chamber 17, a flange 21 on the fire pot extending through the lower wall or bottom 22 of the inner shell 12. The fire pot 20 is formed with downwardly converging walls 23 terminating in a circular flange 24 which flange fits within the upper end of a circular box 25, the lower end of which rests upon the foundation or floor upon which the heater is placed. 4
27 designates a gas burner consisting of a circular plate 28 having a central circular opening 29 therein and having circular grooves 30 formed in its upper face to receive the lower edges of the side walls 31 formed on the upper member 32 of the burner, such upper member and the plate 28 when so placed together forming a mixture chamber 33. Formed on the upper face of the member 32 is a series of cone shaped jets 35 extending upwardly from the member 32 and being in open communication with the mixture chamber 33.
The burner just described is supported by means of bolts 36 whichvextend through the plate 28, the member 32, and through a circular mixing plate 38. such mixing plate 38 having its edge beveled and seated upon the walls 23 of the fire box 20. The plate 38 is provided with a series of openings 39 to receive the jets 35, such openings being flared outwardly and downwardly as indicated at 40. Seated on the mixing plate 38 is a deflector plate 41 having upwardly diverging walls 42 which extend over the mixing plate and are provided with a series of perforations 43 and radial slots 44 for the purpose of deflecting and breaking up the flame from the burner thereby more-intimately mixing any unconsumed gases so that the same are burned at that point.
The burner is sup-plied with gas from two pipes 45 each of which extend through the walls of the box 25 and through the outer shell 11 to the exterior thereof where they are spaced apart as clearly shown in Fig. 4 from a gas supply pipe 46, such gas supply pipe 46 having an outlet opening 47 for each pipe 45, such outlet opening *7 bein directly opposite the center of the open en of its associated pipe 45. The gas sup ly to chains 50 which may extend into the floor above that upon which the heater may be placed so that the furnace may be operated from such floor, such construction being commonand not shown.
Extending into the box 25 is an auxiliary air inlet pipe 52 the outer end of which extends through the outer shell 11 and being provided at such outer end with a damper or closure plate 53 pivotally mounted at 54 to the outer shell 11 and being connected by means of a link 55 to one end 56' of the arm 49 on the gas valve 48.
The device is operated in the following manner:
The arm 49 is operated to turn on gas, such gas passing out of the pipe 46 through the openings 47 and injecting into the open ends of the pipes 45. Such action of the gas entering the pipes t5 sucks in or draws an air supply into the open ends of the pipe 45 where such air and gas mixes and passes into the mixture chamber 33 of the burner. Such mixture passes out of the jets 35 into the fire box 20 where the same may be lighted as is commonly done, the flame from the jets striking against the under side of the deflector plate and being broken up as heretofore described. The heat from such flame passes into the'inner shell 12 air in such pipes.

If it is desired to have a greater amount of heat the gas valve is operated and the damper 53 being connected with the operating arm 49 the damper is correspondingly raised and a greater amount of air introduced to the box 25 thereby supplying a greater amount of air about the flame on each jet. By this regulation of the supply of the auxiliary air to the burner corresponding to the amount of gas being consumed, or in other words. the intensity of the burner flame, I am enabled to more economically use gas for heating purposes than can be done with the ordinary styles of heating devices. Further.v when the flame is low the amount of auxiliary air supplied is correspondingly reduced so that the heat from the flame is held in the inner chamber and not wasted, as the volume of auxiliary air is insufiicient to cause the heat to leave the inner or heat chamber. These advan tages are due to the fact that the auxiliary air supplied to the burner and the amount of gas introduced to the burner are controlled by a single controlling device and the proportion of such auxiliary su ply and the-gas simultaneously regulated wiiich can: not be accurately done where the gas suppl and air supply are independently regulate What I claim is 1. A gas burning device comprising a heater having an outer and an inner shell, said inner shell forming a heat chamber, a fire pot in the lower portion of the heat chamber, an air mixer plate supported in the fire pot. a gas burner supported by said mixer plate below said plate, said mixer plate having a plurality of openings extending therethrough, a series of jets extending upwardly from said burner into the openings in the mixer plate, a box below said fire pot in open communication with the openings in said mixer plate, a combustible mixture pipe for said burner having an open outer end, a gas supply pipe extending across the out-er end of said mixture pipe and spaced apart therefrom, said gas supply pipe having an opening therein opposite the open end of said mixture pipe,
a gas valve on said supply pipe, an air supply pipe extending into the box under said fire pot, a damper on the outer end of said air supply pipe, an arm on said gas valve for operating said valve, and a' connection from said arm to said damper to simultaneously operate said damper with said gas valve,

A gas burning device comprising a gas burner, a series of jets extending upwardly thereon,- a combustible mixture supply pipe for said burner having an open outer end. a gas supply pipe extending across the open end of said mixture pipe spaced apart therefrom and having a gas outlet aperture opposite the open end of said mixture pipe, a plate above said burner having a series of openings therein into which the respective jets on the burner extend, means for introducing an auxiliary air supply to the openings in said plate about said jets, a gas valve on said gas supply pipe, and means for simultaneously operating said gas valve and regulating the auxiliary air supply.
3. A gas burning device comprising a heater having a heat chamber, a fire pot in the lower portion of the heat chamber, an air mixer plate supported in the fire pot, a gas burner supported by said mixer plate below said plate, said mixer plate having a plurality of perforations extending therethrough. a series of jets extending upwardly from said burner into the openings in the mixer plate, a box below said fire pot in open communication with the openings in said mixer plate, a combustible mixture pipe for said burner having an open outer end, a gas supply pipe extending across the outer end of said mixture pipe and spaced apart therefrom, said gas supply pipe having an opening therein opposite the open end of said mixture pipe, a gas valve on said gas supply pipe, an air supply pipe extending into the box under said fire pot, a damper on the outer end of said air supply pipe, an arm on said gas valve for operating said valve, and a connection from said arm to said damper to simultaneously operate saiddamper with said gas valve.

A gas burning device comprising a heater having a heat chamber, a burner in said heat chamber; a. box so located with relation to said burner as to supply combus tion air thereto; a combustible mixture pipe for said burner having an open outer end, a gas supply pipe extending across the outer end of said mixture pipe and spaced apart therefrom, said gas supply pipe having an opening therein opposite the open end of said mixture pipe, a gas valve on said gas supply pipe, an air supply pipe extending into the box under said fire pot, a damper on the outer end of said air supply pipe, an arm on said gas valve for operating said valve, and a connection from said arm to said damper to simultaneously operate said damper with said gas valve.

A gas burning device comprising a. heater having an outer and inner shell, said inner shell forming a heat chamber, a fire pot in the lower portion of the heat chamber, an air mixer plate supported in the fire pot, a gas burner supported by said mixer plate below said plate, said mixer plate having a plurality of perforations extending therethrough, a series of jets extending upwardly from said burner into the openings in the mixer plate,'a box below said fire pot in open communication with the openings in said mixer plate, a combustible mixture pipe for said burner having an open outer end, a gas supply pipe extending across the outer end of said mixture pipe and spaced apart therefrom, said gas supply pipe having an opening therein opposite the open end of said mixture pi e, an air supply pipe delivering air of com ustion to said ox; and means for simultaneously regulating the air and gas supply.

A gas burning device comprising a heater having a heat chamber, a fire pot in the lower'portion of the' heat chamber, an air mixer plate supported in the fire pot, a gas burner supported by said mixer plate below said plate, said mixer plate having a plurality of perforations extending therethrough, a series of jets extending upwardly from said burner into the openings in the mixer plate, a box below said fire pot in open communication with the openings in said mixer plate, a combustible mixture pipe for said burner having an open outer end, a. gas supply pipe extending across the outer end of said mixture pipe and spaced apart therefrom. said gas supply pipe having an opening therein opposite the open end of said mixture pipe, an air supply pipe delivering air of combustion to said box; and
means for simultaneously regulating the air and gas supply.

A gas burning device comprising a heater having. an outer and inner shell, said inner shell forming a heat chamber, a burner in said heat chamber; a box so located with relation to said burner as to supply combustion air thereto; a combustible mixture pipe for said burner having an open outer end, a gas supply pipe extending across the outer end of said mixture pipe and spaced apart therefrom, said gas supply pipe having an opening therein opposite the open end of said mixture pipe, an air supply pipe delivering air of combustion to said box; and means for simultaneously regulating the air and gas supply;

A gas burning device comprising a heater having a heat chamber, a burner in said heat chamber; a box so located with relation to said burner as to supply combustion air thereto; a combustible mixture pipe for said burner having an open outer end, a gas supply pipe extending across the outer end of said mixture pipe and spaced apart therefrom, said gas supply pipe having an opening therein opposite the open end of my hand at Los Angeles, California, this 21st day of August, 1918.
