FENCEPOS'I.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1920.
Application filed July 17, 1919. Serial No. 311,519.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MCCARTHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellevue, in the county of Eaton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Fencepost, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to fence posts, the principal object being to provide an improved fastening wherein a plurality of Wire strands may be quickly and readily attached to the, post, the fastening being such as to be readily disengaged from the fence to allow the removal of the same and without any damage whatsoever to the latter.
Andther object of the invention is to provide a fence post which will be supported in vertical position and held in position rigidly, a novel base for the post being provided to hold the same in such position and which also serves as a connection between the wire fastening bar used in the embodiment of the invention claimed herein.
Another general object of the invention is to provide a fence post which is simple in construction, which consists of few parts, which can be readily assembled and disassembled, and which can be manufactured and sold at a minimum cost.
lVith the above and other general objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of the combinations of elements, constructions and arrangements of parts. for mations and operations and general assemblage, the details of which will be hereinafter fully enlarged upon and recited in the subjoined claims.
On the drawings: v
Figure 1 is a view partly in vertical crosssection and partly in elevation of a fence post constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same parts being broken away; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the post, part of the base plate being broken away.
In the drawing, the numeral 5 designates a tubular post extended through a base, preferably in the form of a concavo-convex disk 6, the disk being located adjacent to the lower end of the post, and being adapted to rest upon the surface of the ground, the lower end of the post being embedded in the ground.
The fence clamping bar is designated at 10 and extends longitudinally of the post and has its lower end bent around a pintle 11 struck in the plate or disk 6 adjacent the side of the post.
The post is provided with spaced openings 12 which register with openings 13 in the bar and through which extends detachable fastening elements 1 1, the wire strands being disposed, between the fence bar and the post.
The construction here shown and described is considered the preferred embodiment of the invention but it will be understood that the same may be modified in many respects and that my limits of such modification are governed by what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In a fence post, a base in the form of a concavo-convex disk, a fence post extending vertically therefrom, a pintle struck from the base and disposed in close proximity to the post, a fence wire clamping bar extending longitudinally of the post having one end bent around the pintle and adapted for pivotal movement thereon, and fastening elements extending transversely through bar and post, to retain the fence wires in position between the post and bar.
2. In a device of the class described, a disk-like base and a post mounted in the base, there being a pintle struck from the base in close proximity to the post; a clamping bar extended longitudinally of the post and having one end fashioned into an eye engaging the pintle to form a pivotal mounting for the bar; and a fastening element extended transversely through the bar and the post.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN MoOARTHY.
Witnesses:
