To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY HOOD, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Baiid-Pullers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in band pullers, and more particularly that class of band pullers designed for use in pulling a metallic band or other suitable binding member taut about a packing case, boX or similar article, and has for its object to provide such a device that will be exceedingly simple in construction, effective in operation, relatively light in weight though strong and durable and inexpensive in the cost of manufacture.

A. further object of the invention is to provide a band puller wherein the parts are so arranged that a straight central pull will always be given to the band or binder and this is accomplished by providing the tool head with two spaced gripping surfaces or prongs as here shown, the space between said gripping surfaces being of suflicient width to permit straddling of the band.

A further object of the invention is to provide a single device of this character, a handle or lever having a head pivoted thereto the inner end of said handle coacting with the pivoted head in such a manner that a band may be irmly held between the handle and head during the operation of pulling the band taut prior to fastening it about the box.,

`With these ends in View, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements, hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.

lin order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which Figure l, is a plan view of my improved band puller.

The reference numeral 5 designates the tool head the inner end of which is bifurcated to provide a pair of spaced arms 6 one of which lies on each side of the handle or lever and through these arms passes the pin lf for pivoting the head 5 to the handle or lever. The space between the arms is prefei'ably widest at its inner end as indicated at 7 to permit the ready passage of the band through said spacewhere it will be gripped or bound between the binding surface 3 of the handle and the coacting binding surface 8 of the head which is the inner face or wall of the space between the arms 6.

ln the outer end of the head intermediate its side edges is formed a notch or chamber 9 so as to form a pair of spaced gripping members 10 in the form of prongs, or other desirable shape and construction and when found desirable these gripping prongs or members may be serrated or provided with barbs 11 as here shown so that the tool may be embedded in the packing case to prevent slipping of the tool while the band is being pulled taut,

In practice one end of the band 12 is lirmly secured to the packing case or box 13 in any suitable and well known manner as by nails, and after said band has been passed around the packing case or boX the free end of said band is threaded or passed through the space between the arms 6 so as to lie between the two binding surfaces 3 and 8, then the gripping edges of the tool are placed against the outside of the box so that one of the gripping prongs lO lies on each side of the band then by exerting pressure upon the handle or lever 2 in the proper direction which is downward when considered in relation to Fig. l the free end of the band will be firmly gripped and held so that further pressure upon the handle or lever will draw the band taut, and when said band is suiiiciently tight the tool may be held in this position until the free end of the band is secured in place.
