certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Banding Devices, of which the'following is a specification.
The main object of my invention is to facilitate and expedite the banding or securing of hoseends to coupling members.
Another object is to make a simple but practical and inexpensive device which can be easily and quickly manipulated to apply a band of wire for the above purpose; the wire band being adapted to be cut and bent from a length of ordinary wire.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device made in accordance with my present invention,
Fig 2 is an elevation of the left hand end of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view showing how the device'of Figs. 1 and 2 can be operated to bend a straight length of wire into a U-shape,
Fig. 4: is a perspective view showing said U-shape wire pressed against the hose in the first stage of banding the hose to a coupling in accordance with the method followed in my present invention,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the U-shape wire after it has been manually bent around the hose so that the looped end passes over the two free ends of the wire,
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing said free ends of the wire having been respectively slid through two holes in one of the jaws of said device,
Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing said wire after the stage illustrated in Fig. 6, in which said free end portions have been bent by a turning movement of said device,
the other jaw of the device having a lip which is inserted between the looped end of the wire and the hose,

Referring to the drawings and particu-' the rear of the lugs 16 are provided with op-- positely disposed recesses 18 in their top edges as shown in Fig. 1. The lugs 16 at their uppermost portions have notches 19 adapted to register with the groove 20 in the jaw 11 so that by inserting a wire within the registering notches and groove the wire can be cut'when the jaws are moved on their pivot. In this manner lengths of wire can be out which can be afterward bent into a U-shape by inserting them trans versely between the jaws and permitting them to rest in the recesses '18, after which, by a compressive movement of the handles against the-action of the spring 21, the wire can be bent into a U-shape as shown in the dotted line position in Fig. 3; it being noted that the jaw 11 at the portion opposite the recesses is of such width as to make room for the thickness of the wire when the rear portions of the jaws are moved toward each other.
The jaw 11 at its outer end is provided with a lip 22 which projects in a direction away from the jaw 12; said lip being preferably curved at its outermost part as shown at 23 to provide a fulcrum for use in one stage of the operation of applying a band to a hose and it will be noted that the surface 24L of the jaw 11 slants at an incline so as to provide a curved pocket 25 between the lip 22 and said surface 24 of the jaw 11. i The jaw 12 has a finger 26 which projects in a direction away from the jaw 11 and said finger is provided with two holes 27 which are spaced apart and which extend in the direction of the length of the jaw 12; a
plane extending through both of said holes also passing beyond the outer surface 28 of said jaw as clearly seen in Fig. 1.
In the use of my invention a pieceof wire as shown at 29 in Fig. 3 is provided by cutting the same from a length of wireby inserting the wire within the notches 19 and groove 20 as previously described and then moving the handles 13 and 14: together. This straight piece of wire 29 is then inserted within the recesses 18 and between the rear portions of the jaws as shown in full lines in Fig. 3; it being preferable to have equal portions of the wire projecting beyond opposite sides of the jaws. The handles 13 and 1 1 are then moved together and the wire will be bent into u shape as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. This U shape wire is then placed upon the hose, such for example as the hose 30 shown in Fig. 4 and while pressed against the hose the looped end 31 of the wire can be turned around the hose and passed over the free end portions 32 as shown in Fig. 5; the looped end being pressed as close to the hose as possible. The free ends 32 of the wire are then inserted through the holes 27 of the finger 26 with the lip 22 extending substantially in the direction of the looped end 31. The device is then turned relatively to the wireso that the end portions 32 by being confined within the holes 27 will be bent at an angle to the portions 33 which are intermediate said portions 32 and the looped portion 31. In this position the lip 22 can be inserted between the looped end 31 and the hose 30. The jaw 11 at its outer end, by being slightly narrower than the distance between the holes 27,
is capable of. extending between the portions 33 of the wire as clearly shown in Figs. 7 and 8. Then by moving the handles 13 and 14: together the outer ends of the jaws will be relatively separated and the wire will be drawn tight around the hose; it being noted that due to the comparative sharp or abrupt bend 34C in the wire that while the jaw 11 holds the loop, the aw 12 will pull a greater length of wire through the looped end and thus firmly bind the wire around the hose. After this clamping action the device can be swung on the curved end 23 of the lip 22 as a fulcrum; the device being moved in the direction of the arrow as in Fig. 8 into the position shown in Fig. 9; it being noted that Fig. 9 is a view looking at the opposite end of the hose. This action will bend the portion 35 around the looped end as shown in Fig, 9 and will also pull the lip 22 from under said looped end so that by permitting the handles 13 and 11 to separate by the action'of the spring 21, the jaw 11 will be moved towardthe jaw 12, after which the finger 26 can be pulled off the ends 32 of the wire. The ends of the wire can then be cut off at distances from the bends 35 and by striking with the device upon these projecting end portions such as illustrated at 36 in Fig. 10, they may be formed into eyelets and the band will be complete. The above steps in the operation can be rapidly performed and a band can be placed upon a hose in a few seconds as has been proved by actual demonstration. Furthermore by the use of my improved device it is unnecessary to have any separate tools or specially formed bands. Any wire having sufiicient tensile strength can be used and a secure and durable structure is the result.
While my invention is particularly adapted for securing the connecting devices on garden hose, I wish it understood that it is not limited to this use as it is applicable for use in many places where it is desired to secure a band to a member.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V
