FINGER-RING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 23, 1919.
Application filed April 1, 1918. Serial No. 226,104.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. Fnnenns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Finger-Ring, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to finger rings, being more particularly a wedding ring. Ordinarily wedding rings consist of a plain band of gold or platinum, but in some 111- stances a more elaborate ring is desired, but at the same time it is desired to retain as nearly as possible the appearance of the old and well known wedding ring. To meet this demand I have provided a wedding ring in which the center consists of what is known as a paved center, that is, diamonds or other stones set completely around the circumference of the ring, or a chased center, and to such a center have added sides of plain rounded contour thereby giving the appearance from the side of the ring of the old fashioned or common form of wedding ring.
A further object of my invention is to provide a ring of the character described in which a tablet or plate is provided for engraving of data, and at the same time making such plate or tablet movable so that ready access to the back of the stones in the ring may be had for the purpose of cleaning such stones and setting.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter from the following description.
Referring to the drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only,
Figure 1 is a face View of a ring embodying a form of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the ring shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view taken through one of the settings.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross sectional view taken through that portion of the ring having the tablet therein.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross sectional view of the ring taken through the pivotal axis of the tablet.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional View showing the tablet in open position, and
Fig. 7 is a view of a portion of the inside of the ring showing the tablet thereon.
11 designates the center or central portion of the ring consisting, in the form shown, of a paved center, that is, a plurality of stones 12 set close together around the circumference of the ring. At each side of the center 11 is placed a millgrained edge 13 and at each side of such millgrained edge is placed inwardly extending flanges 1 L forming the sides of the ring. These sides 14 are preferably plain and rounded on the exterior thereof, as indicated at 15, giving to the side of the ring the appearance of the common form of plain band wedding rmg.
As clearly shown in Fig. 3, the stones, preferably diamonds indicated at 16, are open or exposed on the inside of the ring and it is desirable that the diamonds should be so set so that thesame may be cleaned as occasion may require.
With the construction above outlined it is desirable to have some part of the ring where engraving of data may be placed, and for this purpose I have provided a tablet, indicated at 18, which is curved to form a continuation of the inner lines of the ring. The tablet 18 is mounted 011 a pin 19 which extends through the sides 14 of the ring and the tablet is forced or seated along its side edges into recesses 20 formed in the sides Id of the ring. When it is desired to open the tablet to gain access to the back of the stones under the tablet the same may be swung into open position, as indicated at A in Fig. 6. It is understood that appropriate engraving date, such as indicated at 25 in Fig. 7, may be placed on the inner face of the tablet.
What I claim is 1. A finger ring comprising an annular paved portion set with gems, side portions on said annular portion extending inwardly therefrom, a tablet, and means pivotally supporting it between said side portions and whereby it is movable toward the center of the ring to expose the gems under the tablet.
2. A finger ring comprising an annular portion, side portions on said annular portion extending inwardly from the central portion forming an open channel extending circumferentially around the inner side of the ring, said side portions having recesses formed therein to receive and hold a tablet, a tablet, and means for pivotally mounting the tablet in the side portions.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, California, this 21st day of March, 1918.
GEORGE E. FEAGANS.
