BARREL-CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented 'Nov. 4, 1919.
Application filed April 21,1919. Serial No. 291,550.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH Gr. Iran, a citizen of the United States, residing at Abilene, in the county of Dickinson and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Barrel-Closure, of which the following is a specification.- V
The present invention relates to barrel or basket closures, the principalobject being to provide a detachable closure which will entirely inclos the receptacle to exclude dust from the interior of the same and which will permit the contents of the receptacle being viewed without removing the closure.
A further object of the invention is to provide a closure which is adjustable to barrels or receptacles ofvarious diameters, and which may be readily applied thereto.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a closure which is adaptable to barrels of usual construction and embodies a transparent door which may be raised in order to remove part of the contents of the barrel.
Another object resides in the provision of a closure which adjusts itself to the barrel and which has a contractile member therein which is inclosed and thus prevented from rusting.
An additional object of the present inven tion resides in the provision of a barrel closure which is simple in construction,
which consists of few parts, and which may be manufactured andvplaced on the market at a minimum cost.
With the above and other objects and advantages in View, the invention consists of combinations of elements, constructions, arrangement of parts and general assemblage which will be enlarged upon hereinafter and pointed out in the appended claims.
On the drawing: 7
Figure 1 is a plan view of a barrel closure embodying my improvements;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of a barrel having the closure applied thereto, part of the closure being broken away to show the contractile spring carried by the closure; V
Fig, 3 is a likeview showing the closure in vertical cross section.
Referring in detail to the drawings the numeral 5 denotes a sheet of fabric which may be muslin, canvas or the like or in fact which has a pane of transparent material mounted therein such as celluloid, glass or the hke. This closure is hinged to the ring 7 by relatively small-rings 11 carried by the closure 9 which engagearound the ring 7 and through the fabric sheet 5.
W hen the closure is positioned on the barrel or receptacle the ends of the sheet 5 extend around or skirt the upper edge of the barrel and are held close to the same through the medium of a contractile spring or other resilient band 12, the latter being held in position by extending the lower end of the flexible sheet 5 around the same and stitching this end to the overhanging portion of the flexible sheet as indicated at 13. This spring embraces the barrel and retains the cover in position thereon. A knob or handle 14L is mounted upon the frame or annulus 9 by means of which the hinged cover is raised to gain access to the barrel in order to remove part of the contents of the same.
From this disclosure it will be apparent that I have provided a simple and inexpensive barrel closure which will effectively exclude dust from the interior of the barrel and which will permit the contents of the barrel being viewed without necessitating the removal of the cover.
The embodiment of the invention herein shown and described is considered the preferred construction but it will be understood that the same can be modified in many respects and that my limits of modification are only governed by the appended claims.
That is claimed is:
1. In a barrel closure, a fabric sheet adapted to be disposed over the mouth of the barrel and depend around the sides of thesame, the fabric sheet being provided with a central opening, a ring secured to V the fabric at the edge of the opening, a
frame hinged to the ring, a transparent pane carried by the latter, and resilient means secured to the fabric and entirely inportion of the sheet to afford a circumferenrial pocket and a contractile spring accommodated in the pocket to resiliently retain the cover on the barrel. 7
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as .my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature.
RALPH G. IREY.
closed thereby and adapted to embrace the barrel;
2. A barrel closure comprising a fabric sheet adapted to overlie the opening of the 5 barrel and to skirt the sides of the barrel,
the lower edge of the sheet being turned back upon itself and secured to the major Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissionerof Ijatents; Washington, D. G.
