To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN L. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Recorders Shields, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a shield for notebooks, sketching pads or the like, to be used by civil engineers, or others, in rainy weather, for protecting the notes or sketches made upon the pad or book.

It is frequently necessary for civil engineers, surveyors, timekeepers, Army officers, timber cruisers and others to take notes in the field during rain and snow storms. At such times, the ordinary notebook is often greatly damaged and the notes made obscure or obliterated by the moisture, and often, unless an auxiliary notebook of celluloid or paraflin paper is provided, such work is discontinued until the storm or falling weather is over, necessitating idleness, at times, for a period of days or weeks, resulting in a loss of time and money; and it is an object of this invention to provide a shield, which.

may be carried by the civil engineer or others, for shielding the notebook, sketch pad or the like from the Weather, permitting it to be preserved, intact, with the notes or sketches clearly discernible.

More specifically, the invention comprehends the provision of a board or support, for a notebook, sketch pad or the like, which has a shield of suitable waterproof material attached thereto, the front side of which shield is provided with a transparent window to permit the Visioning of the supporting board, while the sides of the shield structure are free from connection with the supporting board for a portion of their lengths to permit the user to insert his arms Within the shield for writing or making sketches in the notebook or pad upon the support, and further to provide a flexible loop or stud structure which is connected to the supporting board, and the shield and is provided with a loop adapted to be mounted about the neck of the user.

The shield or curtain 3 of the device is formed of any suitable waterproof material such as enameled drill, and is tacked at its lower edge to the outer or forward edge of the support 1 and to each side edge of the support for a portion of the length of the side edge, forming side panels 4 and 5 and a front or main panel or portion 6. The sides 41 and 5 of the shield or curtain 3 are free from attachment to the support 1 at their lower edges, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing to permit the user to insert his arm into the space within the shield or curtain and above the support 1, to enable him to write upon the pad or notebook supported by the support 1. The front 6 of the shield or curtain 3 is provided with an opening 7 therein, in which is positioned a transparent panel or Window 8, formed of any suitable transparent material, preferably fifteen gage celluloid, mica, or the like. The front side 6 inclines rearwardly over the support 1, positioning the window 8 at an incline, so that the user may look through this window and see the notebook or pad carried by the support 1. The side edges of the front 6 converge toward its upper ends, so that it will fit the body of the wearer. A flexible strap 10 is connected to one rear corner of the support 1, and it extends upwardly through an eye 11 in the upper corner of the front 6, the said strap being knotted as shown at 12 to connect it to the front 6 and prevent the latter from sliding upon the strap. This strap may be extended from the eye 11, to a second eye 13, in the other upper corner of the front 6, when it is again knotted and from this eye extends downwardly to the opposite corner of the support 1, the said rear corners of the shield 3 forms a shed to protect the support l and the notebook thereon, enabling the user to make sketches or notes upon the pad or notebook, without liability of the notebook becoming mutilated or the sketching.

Changes in detail may be n'iade without departing from the spirit of this invention, but;

" I claim:

1. A recorders shield comprising a supporting board, an opaque waterproof curtain attached to the edges of the board and inclining upwardly thereover, the rear edge portions of said curtain being free from attachment to the board to permit the insertion of a users hands beneath the curtain, and a transparent panel in said curtain.

2. A recorders shield comprising a supporting board, means for suspending the board from the body of a user in operative position for service, a waterproof curtain attached to the edges of said board and com prising front and side portions, said front portion inclining upwardly over the board, the rear edge portions of said side portion being free from attachment to the board to permit the insertion of a users hands beneath the curtain.

A recorders shield comprising a supporting board, means for suspending the board from the body of a user in operative position for service, an opaque waterproof curtain attached to the edges of said board and comprising front and side portions, said front portion inclining upwardly over the board, the rear edge portions of said side portion being free from attachment to the board to permit the insertion of a users hands beneath the curtain, and a transparent panel carried by the front portion of said curtain.

A recorders shield comprising a supporting board, means for suspending the board from the body of a user in operative position for service, a Waterproof curtain attached to the edges of said board and comprising front and side portions, said front portion inclining upwardly over the board, the rear edge portions of said side portion being free from attachment to the board to permit the insertion of a users hands beneath the curtain, a transparent panel carried by the front portion of said curtain, the lateral edges of said front portion gradually converging toward its upper edge.

5. A recorders shield comprising a supporting board, a Waterproof curtain attached to the edges of the board and including a front and side portion, the rear edge portions of said side portions being free from attachment to the board to permit the insertion of a users hands beneath the curtain, a transparent panel carried by the front portion of said curtain, straps connected to said board near its rear edge and extending upwardly, being connected to the upper edge of said front portion and eX- tended to form a loop for mounting about the neck of a user.
