FOLDING- TABLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. COADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which'it appertains a) make and use the same.
' lhe invention relates to folding tables and.
-with bench legs and feet set far enough apart to support the table when folded, the leaves being hinged to the top of said middle portion, and supported when in an extended position by legs hingedly secured to. said middle portion that fold thereunder when the table is folded.
The invention will be described in detail hereinafter, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the table, showing it in an extended position in full 'lines and in broken lines the position when folded,
-Fig. 2, a side view. of the table extended, Fig. 3, a cross section of the table extended, Fig. 4, an end view in a folded position, Fig. 5, a cross section of the folded table, and
Fig. 6, a detail of one of the hinges. Referring to the drawings in which simi lar reference characters will be,' used to.
designate corresponding parts in the several views, 1 indicates the upright legs of the middle section of the table each having two feet 2 offset from the lines of the respective edges of said legs, 3 indicating the top of the middle section, and 4 a horizontal brace secured to legs 1 at a short distance above Specificatiim of Letters Patent.

their lower ends. 5 indicates angle cleats secured to' said brace 4 and the legs 1 to make a rlgid structure of said middle section. As shown in the drawings, the upper portions of legs 1 are relatively narrower than the space utilized'for feet 2 and the top 3 is but slightly wider than the upper portions of the legs. a
The side edges of top 3 is formed with a ,moldlng edge having a verticalportion 3 and an outwardly and downwardlv curved surface 3", and hinged thereto are table leaves 6 having their hinged edges formed to fit the edges of top 3 when the leaves are in their raised positions, this structure being common in table top and leaf structure. The hinges 7 used for securing the top 3 and leaves 6 may be of any suitable type, in the form shown in the drawings a recess 8 being formed in top 3 toreceive the hinge joint.
When in raised positions the leaves 6 are held by means of legs 9 consisting of upright bars 10, pivotally mounted between table top 3 and horizontal brace 4 by means of pins 11 and 12 respectively, horizontal members 13 and a vertical supporting member 14 of the same length as legs 1, so that when the leaves are raised and the legs 9 are supporting the leaves a four legged table is provided. 15 indicates a block on the underside of each leaf 6 to limit the movement of leg 9 in moving it to a supporting position.
. Brace 4 is formed with recesses 16 to receive the lower end of supporting member 14 when the table is folded, said recessesbeing provided preferably by the ornamental configuration of the brace, and permits folding the supporting legs under the top 3 so that the leaves will drop down parallel with legs 1 and within the vertical plane of the outer edges of feet 2. v
In operation it will be understood that the middle portion of the table is constructed similarly to a high bench and is equally as self-supporting as a bench, and as, when the leaves are folded they are within the planes of the feet 2 of the midde ortion, the space occupied by the folded ta le is practically negligible. and it may be set up against a wall, or, if desired, in a closet orany other place out of the way. At the same time, as
the table, whenfolded, is self-supporting it may be used as a part of the ornamentation of the room and utilized to hold a lamp or other ornaments if desired.
17 indicates angle braces secured to legs 1 and top 3 to reinforc the middle structure and in conjunction with horizontal brace 4C and angle. cleats 5 add to the rigidity of the structure.
Having thus described my invention What I claim is In a folding table, a middle portion comtop, and a supporting leg for each leaf comprising an upright bar pivotaiig. secured to the top and brace, horizontal members extending from said bar, and a supporting member on the ends of said horizontal members of equal length with the legs on the middie portion, said leaf supporting legs adapted to fold under the top when not in use and the supporting member seating" in a recess in the brace.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
