rllhis invention relates in general to automobiles and has particular reference to a device which will direct air currents into the body of the vehicle causing the cool air currents to cool the feet of the chauffeur.
Another obj ect of this inventlon is 'the production of a foot cooler for automobiles.
which consists in a hinged shutter, whereby the shutter may be moved to an open position to direct air currents into the interior of the vehicle body, although when desired the shutter may be moved to a closed osition to prevent rain or very cold winds rom being deflected thereby into the interior of the vehicle.
A still further object ofthis invention is the production of a foot 'cooler for automobiles which includes in combination with the hinged shutter, a simple and efficient latching means for positively holding the shutter in an opened or in a closed position at the desire of the operator.V

The foot cooler 10 comprises a frame formed of a pair of rectangular plates 12 having the rectangular openings' 13 formed centrally therethrough. Each plate l2 has flanges 14 formed thereon around its respective opening 13, it being noted, by referrin to Fig. 4: that the flanges of one plate exten s in the opposite direction to the flanges of the other plate.- Accordingly, the flanges of one plate maybe telescoped upon the flanges of the remaining plate, thus bringin the plates 12 into engagement with the sur aces of the body 11 of the vehicle. At this time, suitable retaining bolts l5 may be passed through the plates and nuts 16 are screwed onto the projecting ends of the bolts, thus fixing the plates in set position, whereby the. frame of the cooler will be held y in an operative position upon the body ofthe motor vehicle.

The .shutter 17, which is substantially the same sire as the opening through the frame, being slightly larger than the opening to cover the same when desired is provide This shutter 17 has, sleeves 18 thereon which fit upon sleevesv 19 carried by the frame of the device, a pivot pin 20 extending through the sleeves 18"and 19 and thus pivotally or hingedly mounting the shutter 17 upon the frame. Therefore it is obvious that when desired the shutter may be swung to a closed position as shown in Fig. l to revent thev passage of air currents through t e frame into the body of the vehicle, or the shutter may be opened as indicated in Fig. 2 to allow air currents to be deiected thereby into the body of the vehicle. A retaining staple 22 is fixed upon the inner surface of the shutter 17 and it .carries a clip 22. A pair of links 32 are provided and these links are positioned upon opposite sides of the lever 21. Each link has one end thereof connected to the lever 21 by a pivot pin 33 at a point adjacent the center of the lever,
-while the remaining ends of the links are pivotally mounted upon the pin 34 carried by the block 28.
When the shutter 17 is in an open position as shown in Figs. 2 and 4 inclusive, the lever 21 will be engaging the lock 28, the block being received within the notch 26 at the freeend of the lever. the links 32 upon opposite sides of the lever will hold the same against side displacement from engagement with the block 28 and as the fitting of the block within the notch 26 will hold the lever from longitudinal thrust, it is obvious the shutter will be firmly held in an open position. Due to the oblique angle the s utter is held 1n when 1n an open position, with respect to the surface of the body 11 of the vehicle, it is obvious that the air currents caught by the shutter will be deflected through the opening of the frame 12 into the vehicle body for the purpose specified.
If it is not desired to have such air currents assing into the vehicle body, as during co d weather or when it 1s rain1ng, for under such conditions rain would pass into the vehicle body, th'e operator may rip the inner end of the lever 21 and lift t e same upwardly from engagement with the block 28 and then draw inwardly thereupon, which action will cause the links 32 to move in a clockwise direction as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 4. As the lever 21 moves inwardly, it will therefore swing the shutter 17 to a closed position. When the shutter finally engages the sur-face of the frame 12, the lever as well as the links will again assume a horizontal extension, thus causing the block 28 to be received 1n the notch 25' adjacent the end of the lever connected to the clip 23. This engagement therefore will hold the shutter in a closed position, since the notches are in direct alinement with the center of the pivotal point of securement of the lever, thereby preventing the shutter from being accidentally thrown to an open position, while as above explained, fitting of links u on opposite surfaces of the lever will hold t e same from side displacement from the block 28. It should also be understood that due to the pivotal sup rt of the block and also of the .end of the ver connected to the shutter, the
links and lever' may be permitted proper vmovement to accommodate the are of a circle in which the outer end of the shutter moves when moving either to an open or a closed position.
It will therefore be noted that a very sim-I ple and elicient means has been provided The fitting of said block and for deflecting air currents into the body of a motor vehicle when it is desired to cool the interior thereof, although this means may be closed to prevent the beatin of the weather into the interior of the vehic e body. Furthermore, it will also be noted that the latching means is positive in operation to retain the shutter 1n either an open or a closed position, this latching means being capable of very quick and eas movement for accomplishing the desire results of opening or closing and then retaining the shutter in the position it has just assumed.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved form of my invention. It is ,to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
