Description
D. .1. ARNOLD.
Improvement in Bee-Hives.
Patented Sep.24, 1872.
@tint-141225.
NrrED STATES- DON J. ARNOLD, OF BROWNVILLE, NEBRASKA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEE-HIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l3i,589, dated September 24, 1872.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DoN J. ARNOLD, of Brownville, in the county of Nemaha and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved BeeHive, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved bee-hive, the line c c, Fig. 2, indicating the plane of section. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same taken on the plane of the line k 7c, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new construction of bee-hive, whereby the frames are secured in their appropriate places when the hive is shut,
rbut liberated, to be easily removed when the hive is open, and whereby the surplus honeyboxes are held confined to the lid when the same is opened and are not necessarily exposed. The invention consists, first, in applying wedges or inclined blocks to the lid of the hive for holding the frames together While the lid is closed. The invention also consists in such a combination of the upper hood or cover With the lid of the homestead and with the surplus honey-boxes that the latter will be confined in the hood, which they lit exactly while the lid is opened.
Ain the drawing represents the lowerpart of the homestead of a bee-hive. B is the lid of the same, hinged at a. O C are the honey-frames, rested on notched ba-rs e e, which are secured in the lower part of the boXA. Theframes areheld apart by pins b b, projecting from their upper parts toward each other. dd are two wed ges or inclined Wires or blocks fastened in the lid, and
bearing, when the lid is closed, against the sides ofthe outer two frames, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2. These blocks or wedges hold the frame properly upright and keep them also the necessary distance from the sides of the homestead. When the lid is swung open the blocks or wedgesd are carried away from the frames and allow them to be readily removed. D D are the surplus honey-boXes, placed upon the slotted top ofthe lid B 'and covered by the hood or cover E, which they lill nearly entire.
The hood is so rmly secured to the lid by hooks or other devices as not to become detached when the lid is opened. The surplus honey-boxes are consequently not necessarily removed when the lid is opened, but can remain in the hood and afterward be brought into their normal position upon the closing ot' the lid.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenty l. The lid B, hinged ata and provided with the blocks d d, in combination with the vertically-hinged comb-frames O C, to operate as and for the purpose specified.
2.` The combination of the hood E with the slotted lid B and the surplus honey-boxes D of a bee-hive, all operating toleave the honeyboxes uncovered when the lid is opened, as
set forth.
