Description

ICE.
FABIEN VARIN, OF HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA.
` IMPROVEMENT IN BEE-HIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,799, dated November '7, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FABIEN VARIN, of Huntsville, in the county of Madison, and State of Alabama, have invented a new and valilable Improvement in Bee-Hive Protectors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this speciiication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a vertical longitudinal section of my invention. Fig. 2 is an under-side view of sliding ribbed drawer.
This invention has relation to bee-hives; and consists in the construction and arrangement of an apparatus to prevent the entrance of moths and other like injurious insects to the body of the hive.
This apparatus is to be placed before the entrance to the hive, and constitutes a passage for the bees.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, A represents the base of the apparatus, which I term a protector, into which is sunk a trough, B, to hold water. C represents a box which rits on top of the base A, and is furnished with an open mouth and with a hinged door, the latter being marked D, and operated to shut and close by means of a rod, D', which projects beyond the front of the box C. Into said box a drawer, E, slides. Its bottom is composed of wires or bars, F, set at some distance apart. An entrance, j, is provided for the bees, which are able to pass over these wires. The moths cnnnot do so, and hence must, in the attempt, fall into the trough beneath, where they will be drowned. K represents ribs, which prevent the moths from scaling the sides of the drawer to escape from the trough. One set of ribs may be made to slide within the other, so that they may betaken apart for cleaning, &c. A iiange or ledge, L, projects over the sides ofthe trough, as a further security against the escape of moths. The door B is to be closed when the drawer is removed and opened when the same is replaced.
I claim as my inventionl. The bee-hive protector, having the drawer E, constructed as described, with ribs F and trough B, substantially as described. i
2. The drawer E constructed in two parts and furnished with the horizontal shelves K, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The box C having the hinged door I) and rod D', in combination with the drawer E, having ribs F, shelves K, and trough B, as and for the purpose specified.
Intestimony that I claim the above I have here unto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
