' Specification of Least-Paar. Tat t t 9,
Application filed April 11, 1919. Serial No. 289,289.
To all whom itmag concern:
"Be it known that I, CLYDE NEipnAMMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iiemoyne, in the county of Cumberland and State otPehnsyIvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Hasps for Dinner Pails and thelike; and
I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, andexact descriptioniof th'e invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same,
My invention "relates to (improvements in locking devices of the slidingbolt type.
An important object of this invention is i to provide a locking device especially adapted for use in connection with small receptacles and adapted for readyope'r'ation.
A further object of this invention is to provide a locking device having a locking plate provided with novel gripping means and supporting means for sliding bolt.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described which is of highly simplified construction, few in parts, and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a receptacle having my improved lock applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectiontaken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, in the direction of the arrow, and,
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on line 44 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a receptacle having a cover 6. The lock generally designated by the numeral 7 includes a plate 8 having its upper end portion rolled upon itself to provide a v hinge barrel 9 adapted to receive a pivot element 10 secured to the cover as indicated at 11. The central portion of the plate 8 is provided with vertical and transverse in= cislons providing a central openlng 12 and a partly severed portion 13. The opening 12 in the plate is adapted "to receive a, U-
shaped eye 13 secured to the receptacle 1 as indicatedat 14. As indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, the partly severed portion 13 is bent upon theadjacent portion oflthe plate to provide a sleefve "ior supportn i a "sliding bolt-1 5. Theloclring or sliding boltl5 is u sliaped-and .has one end thereof curved to provide "a handle 16. A coil spring 17 is, confineclbetweenthe 'fsl'eeve 3 and the handlers 'for retaining the bolt in engagement withthe eye 13. Asshownin Fig.'jl thel ower portion of the plate is provided with a transverse incision 18 thereby providing a finger pieceor lip 19 adapted for coaction with thehandle 16 in bringing the sliding bolt in "and out of engagement with the eye 13. Asclearly shown in Fig. 1, the finger piece 19 is arhandle 16 therebyrendering, the locking 1 bolt ca ableorex edintus operation.
n the use of my invention, when it is desired to open the lock, the elements 16 and 19 are drawn together thereby drawing the locking bolt out of engagement with the eye.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I may make such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A device of the character described including, a locking plate having longitudinal and transverse incisions therein thereby providing a partly severed portion adapted to be bent upon the adjacent portion of the plate for providing a sleeve, a locking bolt extending through the sleeve, and an eye disposed in the path of travel of the bolt and adapted to be extended through the opening provided by the incisions in the plate, said eye being adapted to receive said locking bolt. 1
2. A device of the character described including, a plate having longitudinal and transverse incisions therein thereby providing an opening and a partly severed portion adapted to be bent upon the adjacent portion of the plate for providing a sleeve, a U- shaped locking bolt having one arm ex tendedthrough said sleeve, the outer end portion of one arm of said U-shaped locking bolt being bent upon itself to provide a handle, a coil spring disposed between said sleeve and said handle, a finger piece carried-by said plate and adapted ior coaction with the handle, and a keeper adapted to engage .a portion of said U-shaped locking bolt.
3. A device of the character described including, pivoted plate having longitudinal and transverse incisions therein thereby providing a central opening and a partly severed portion adapted to be bent upon the adjacent portion of the plate forproviding a enema U-shaped locking bolt slidably mounted in said sleeve, a locking eye adapted to be extended through the opening in said plate, ahandle carried by one arm of the U-shaped locking bolt, and a coil spring mounted on one arm of. said U-shaped looking bolt and confined between said sleeve andsaid handle, said plate being provided in its lower portion With a transverse incision thereby providing a second partly severed'portion adapted to be bent at a right angle to the plate for providing a manipu-- lating element adapted for coaction with 1 said handle.
eluding, a pivoted plate having longitudinal and transverse incisions therein thereby providing an opening and a partly severed portion adapted to be bent upon the adjacent portion of the plate for providing a sleeve, a locking bolt including long and short arms, said long arni being extended through said sleeve and having its free end portion bent to provide a downwardly extending handle, an eye adapted to be extended through the opening of said plate for receiving the short arm of said locking bolt, a coil spring mounted on the long arin of said locking bolt and confined between said sleeve and said handle, said locking plate being provided in its lower portion with a transverse incision thereby providing a second partly severed portion adapted to be bent at right angles to the plate for providing a finger piece adapted for coaction with said handle, said finger piece being arranged in spaced parallel relation to said handle.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLYDE NEIDHAMMER.
