ATTORNE' HENRY WERNER, or HARTFORD, Wiscons n.
g of Patentaaata, 19a
Application filed May 18, 1920. Serial No. 382,222.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,HENRY WERNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Washington and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door locking means more especially designed for the doors of stables and the principal object of the invention is to provide means whereby the door may be unlatched by a member adapted to be actuated by the foot.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for locking the latching means against movement so as to prevent the door being opened by an unauthorized person.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, ref erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view showing a pair of double doors provided with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3-is a section on line 3'3 of Fig 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the locking means for the door.
In these drawings 1 indicates a portion of the barn which is provided with the door opening 2. I have shown the door3 as composed of the upper and lower sections 4 which i are independent of each other, though it will of course be understood that the invention may be used on a door formed in one section. Each section has a keeper member 5 thereon and each member is adapted to be engaged by a latch member 6 which is pivotally connected at one-end to the door frame and has its other end engaging the keeper member. The two latch members are connected together by the link 7 and a foot operated lever 8 is pivoted to the door frame, connected with the lower latch member by the link 9. The end of this foot lever is provided with an offset portion which engages the door jamb and the extremity of this lever projects outside of the door frame where it is provided with a pedal part 10. A similar part 11 is formed on the part of said lever lying within the door so that the lever may be operated from within the barn or from outside the same. i
It will be seen that by depressing the foot lever both latch members will be lowered out of engagement with the keepers and thus permit the door sections to be opened.
I provide means for normally holding the latch members in raised position ready to engage the keepers, such means consisting of a spring 12 having one end secured to the door frame and its other end connected with the upper latch member. 7 i
I also provide means for holding the latch members in looking position, such means consisting of a lever 13 passing through an opening formed in the doorframe and havmg one end located under the upper latch member and its other end adapted to be engaged by a locking bar 14 which is carried by the bracket 15 secured to a part of the door frame. By swinging this bar downwardly into engagement with the outer end of the lever 13 the inner end of this lever will engage the lower edge of the upper latch member and prevent the same from being lowered out of engagement with the keeper. to provide an offset portion 16 which engages the lever and this bar is also formed with a handle 17.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. In combination with a sectional door and door frame, a keeper carried by each sectionof the door, a latch member for each keeperpivoted to the frame, a link connecting the two members together, springmeans for holding the latch members in latching position, a foot lever pivoted to the door frame and having a foot engaging portion on each side of the door, a link connecting said foot lever with one of the latch mem' As will be seen said bar 15 isbent bers and hand operated means associated latchmember, a rocking lever pivoted in with one of the latch members for holding the door frame'and having one end located 10 the same in latching position. under the latch member and a locking bar a 2. In combination with a door and a door having anoffset'portion for engaging the 5 frame, a keeper on the door, a latch member lever for holding it in locking position.
pivoted to the frame, spring means for hold- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ing the latch member in looking position;[a" i foot operated lever connected With said-* 3 HENRY WERNER.
