PETER H. SAGER, OF MARIANN A, FLORIDA.
FLUSHING AND COVER-OPERATING MECHANISM FOR. TOILETS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 19, 1919.
Application filed March 15, 1918. Serial No. 222,670.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER H. SAGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marianna, in the county of Jackson and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flushing and Cover-Operating Mechanisms for Toilets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a manually operated mechanism for raising the cover of ordinary water closets or toilet bowls and for lowering the cover and flushing the bowl simultaneously with the lowering of the seat cover.
More specifically, the invention comprehends the provision of a pivotally mounted manually operated lever which is connected, through the medium of a bar, to the seat cover of an ordinary water closet or toilet bowl, which lever engages and idly operates a pivoted pawl upon the raising action of the cover of the bowl and strikes and operates the pawl in a movement which lowers the cover of the bowl for operating the flushing mechanism to flush the bowl simultaneously with the lowering of the cover thereof.
With the foregoing and other objects 1n view, this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanyin'g drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved toilet attachment showing the same in its normal position at which time the cover of the seat is in a closed position.
Fig. 2 is a top plan of the attachment.
Fig. 3 is' a side elevation of the attachment showing the seat cover in a partially raised position at which time the manually operated lever is in engagement with the flushing pawl.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the device showlng the cover in a raised or opened po sition, and
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a toilet paper holding plate which is attached to the standards that pivotally support the manually operated lever.
Referring more particularly to the drawlngs, l designates an ordinary closet bowl of the type which is flushed from a flushing tank by the operation of a rod or chain as indicated at 3. The flushing mechanism 'is the ordinary construction employed in water closets or toilets and a rod is preferably employed in lieu of the chain or cord, however, the chain or cord may be employed without departing from the spirit of this invention. The bowl 2 has the usual type of seat 4 and cover 5 which forms a closure for the opening in the seat 4: when the cover is in a lowered position.
A standard 6 is supported alongside of the bowl 1, and this standard has a hand lever 7 pivotally connected thereto as shown at 8. The hand lever 7 has a bar 9 pivotally connected to its rear end as shown at 10 and the bar 9 is also pivotally connected as shown at 11 to the cover 5 forwardly of the hinge orjpivotlQ of the cover.
A plate 20 is mounted upon the upper end of the standard 6. The said plate 20 is provided with a recess extending upwardly therein from its lower end, as indicated in dotted lines at 21 in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
5 A toilet paper rack 22 of any ordinary coneach side of the bowl 1 if it is so desired without departing from the spirit of this invention. V
The spring 13 facilitates the downward movement of the outer end. of the lever 14; by assisting the pressure applied thereto to lower this end of the lever. V
. From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the advantages of construction and the method of operation of the improved flushing and cover operating mechanism for toilets will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains and, while in the foregoing description, the principle of the operation of this invention has been described together with various features .of construction, it is to be under- 30 stood that certainv minor features of construcported along side of said bowl, ahand lever;
pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said standard and lying in a plane above the bowl and cover, a bar pivotally connected 7 to the inner end of said hand lever and pivotally connected to said cover a short distance forwardly of the hinge'of the cover for raising and lowering the cover upon pivotal movement of the hand lever, an ordinary flushing mechanism for said bowl, and means operated by the inner end of said lever during the-pivotal movement thereof to move said cover into a closed position for operating said flushing mechanism. 7
2. In a device as set forth, the combination Copies of this patent may be obtained for heretofore described be duplicated upon with an ordinary closet bowl,a hinged cover therefor, a flushing mechanism for flushing said bowl including an operating rod, of a pivoted hand lever, means connecting said hand lever and said cover for raising and lowering the cover upon operation of the the same to move said operating mechanism. 7
8. In a device as set forth, the combination with an ordinary water closet bowl, a hinged cover for sald bowl, a flushing mechanlsm for fiushmg sald bowl includlng an operating rod, of a pin carried by said operating rod, a hand lever pivotally mounted intermediate: its ends above said cover, a 'bar pivotally connected to the inner end of said hand lever and pivotally connected tosaid cover forwardly of the hinges of the cover,
a pawl arranged in the path of the inner V end of the hand lever and normally engaging said pin, whereby upon movement of said hand lever to lower said cover, thepawl will be actuated to cause the same to move said flushing mechanism operating rod downward to operate the flushing mecha nism.
.4-, In adevice as set forth, the combineb1011 with an ordinary water closet bowl, a
hinged cover for said bowl, a flushing mechanism for flushing said bowl including an operating rod, of a pin carried by said; operating rod, a hand lever pivotally'mounted intermediate its endsabove said bowl, a barpivotally connected to the inner end of said i hand lever and pivotally connected to said seat forwardly of the hinges of the cover, a pivoted pawl arranged in the path of the inner end, of the hand lever and normally engaging said pin, a standard for supporting said lever, and a springconnected to said standard and said lever, as and for the pur pose specified,
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.-
