COOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 19, 1919.
Application filed March 27, 1919. Serial No. 285,419.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CALVIN D. I-IrxsoN, a citizen of the United States, resident of Hiawatha, in the county of Brown and State of Kansas, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Coops; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, Which form a part of this specification.
The invention has relation to sheet metal brood coops, having for its object to provide an improved coop, of simple construction, all the parts of which are permanently connected together; being capable of being readily connected up for use by an unskilled person, and as readily collapsed or folded into flat form within small compass for storage or transportation.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention, showing the bridging and connecting member in position before it is bent downwardly at one side to engage the adjacent side of the base; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention partially folded; Fig. 3 is an edge view of the invention completely folded and partly broken away, and Fig. 4: is a detail sectional view showing the engagement of the downwardly bent portion of the bridging and connecting member with the base.
In these drawings the numeral 2 designates the base or bottom of the coop, of rectangular form, and 3 and 4 are end pieces hinged at their lower edges to said base at 5, and 6, these end pieces being foldable one upon the other, the hinge pins 5 for the up per end piece being located at a higher level than the hinge pins 6 for the lower end piece, in adaptation for flat folding. These end pieces have curved or arcuate tops 7,
and covering and bridging the same is a normally flat member 8, hinged to the base 2 at 9 at right angles to the hinges 5 and 6, said member being adapted to be folded upwardly to form one side of the coop, transversely over the arcuate tops of the end pieces to form the top of the coop, and down again upon the other side to form the opposite side of the coop, the upstanding end pieces being used as formers or guides in the bending operation.
To facilitate the bending of the bridging member 8, the end pieces have each an upper central vertical pin 10, and the said bridgin member has lateral central perforations 10 Which engage said pins to indicate to the operator that the bendin is being correctly done and to serve as a fastening means to hold the end pieces and top or bridging member together or against lateral separation.
\Vhen the bridgin member 8 is bent down to form the said opposite side of the coop, its lower edge is adapted to have spring snap engagement with catches of the adjacent edge of the base 2, said catches being usually in the form of hooks 11 of the base 2 engaging slots 12 of the free edge of the bridging member.
In folding for storage, the end pieces being folded one upon the other as shown in Fig. 2, both end pieces and the base 2 are folded upon the hinges 9 to lie upon the bridging member 2, the hinges 9 being located upon a higher level than the hlnges 5 so that the parts will fold flat with the end piece 7 parallel to and close against said member.
The lateral and upper margins of the end pieces may be strengthened by beads 13, and the free edge of the member 8 may be similarly strengthened at 14 if desired. Straps (not shown) may also be used for strengthening purposes.
I claim In a sheet metal coop, a rectangular base, two end pieces hinged to said base, a bridging and connecting member hinged to said base at rlght angles to the hinges of said end pieces, said member being normally flat and engagement with the adjacent side of said bendable upwardly transversely and doWnbase. 10 Wardly over said end pieces to form the side In testimony whereof I affix my signature Walls and top wall of the coop, said end in presence of two Witnesses.
5 pieces having central vertical pins and said CALVIN D. HIXSON.
member having lateral slots engaging said Witnesses; pins for guiding and holding purposes, the C. W. PLAMANN, free end of said member having spring snap GEO. O. MCLAUGHLIN.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
