ARTHUR W. CADMUS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE W. F. POWERS COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
DISPLAY-EASEL.
Application filed. January 20, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. OADMUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Easels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to show cards of the easel type, particularly those made of cardboard for advertising purposes, and its chief object is to provide an inexpensive device of simple construction which can be folded or collapsed to compact form for shipment and storage. To this and other ends the invention consists in the novel features and combinations hereinafter described.
One form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a rear view of the easel, erected for use.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a rear view of the easel with the supporting members disengaged from each other and folded down upon the body of the easel.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an edgewise View of the easel collapsed.
The body 10 of the easel illustrated is formed of two pieces of cardboard 11, 12, arranged one above the other and hinged together so as to fold together, as will be readily understood. The hinge may consist of a strip of strong fabric 13 securely glued to the meeting edges of the two parts. The direction of fold is preferably as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1, so that the front surfaces of the two parts or leaves will come together and thus be protected from injury. To the back of the lower section, 12, is hinged a foot 141 to swing on a vertical line 15 and provided with a locking aperture 16 in its upper portion. Above the foot 14: is an arm 17, hinged to the upper section 11 to swing on a vertical line 18, which, it will be observed in Fig. 3, is slightly to the left of the line 15 on which the foot 14 folds. The said arm is in two parts, 19, 20, hinged to fold together on a horizontal line 21 which is at about the same height (or at least not much lower) as the line of fold of the hinge 13. On the Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 143,469.
left edge of the lower part of the arm is a tab 22 adapted to enter the opening or slot 16 in the foot 14 and having at its upper and lower corners fingers 23, one or the other of which is to engage an edge of the said opening 16 to prevent accidental disengagement.
The device is set up as clearly shown in Fig. 1, hinged two-part arm 17 being held against bending on line 21 by the engagement of tab 22 with the foot 14, in the open ing 16, which engagement also holds the foot out in position to support the easel. To collapse the easel the tab or tongue 22 is disengaged from the slot 16 and the arm 17 and foot 14: are folded down upon the body of the easel, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Then the lower part of the arm is folded upwardly upon the upper part, and the two sections of the easel-body are folded together forwardly, leaving the whole as seen in Fig. 5. It will be observed that the said lower section 20 of the arm 17 is entirely free from the lower easel-section 12; that is, it is attached only to the upper arm-section 19.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact construction herein specifically described, but can be embodied in other forms without departure from its spirit.
I claim as my invention:
1. An easel of the kind described, comprising a body-portion composed of upper and lower parts or sections hinged to fold together along a. horizontal line, a foot hinged to the lower section to fold upon the said lower section along a vertical line, an arm hinged to the upper section to fold upon the same along a vertical line and having a lower part hinged to fold upon the upper part along a horizontal line said lower part extending below the line of fold of the body-portion, and means for releasably connecting the lower portion of said arm to the foot.
2. An easel of the kind described, comprising a body-portion composed of upper and lower sections hinged together to fold one upon the other along a horizontal line, a slotted foot hinged to the lower section and adapted to be folded down upon the same along a horizontal line, and an arm comprising an upper part hinged tothe upper section of the body-portion to fold down upon the same along a vertical line and a lower part hinged to the upper part to fold upon the same along a horizontal arm, said lower part extending below the lower section of the body-portion and having on its free or outer edge atab adapted to releasably en g'age the slot in said foot to main tain the foot and the arm in extended position. 10 In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my, signature; 1
ARTHUR W. CADMUS.
