PORTABLE ELECTRIC LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 19, 1919.
Application filed April 16, 1917. Serial No. 162,348.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALERIUS T. JENNINGS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Electric Lamps, of which the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description.
' This inventionv relates to portable electric lamps, and its primary object is to provide'a portable lamp of improved and novel construction. Lamps of this class are usually provided wit-h a handle which contains a lamp socket, sometimes in the form of a switch socket. One of the objects of this invention is to provide means for guarding the push button, or key of the socket, from injury. Another object is to provide improved means for removably holding the socket in place. Another object is to provide a guard of improved construction. lVith these and other objects in view, this invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

- Referring to said drawing, the reference character A, designates an electric lamp socket of well known construction, having oppositely disposed push buttons 7, 8, projecting radially through holes in the wall of the socket, and connected with the switch mechanism of the socket, in accordance with the arrangement well known to those skilled in this art. The handle 9, which may be constructed of wood, non-conducting material or metal, if desired, has an enlarged socketed end 10, for the reception of the lamp socket A, and also'a centrally bored hand grip portion 11. The socket A, may fit snugly in the socket of the portion 10, and the conductor cords 12, extend from the lamp socket and out through the bore of the handle. The socketed end 10, is formed with two oppositely disposed holes 13, which are in line with the push buttons 7, 8, thereby afiording access to the buttons whereby they may be manipulated. Preferably, said holes are round and large enough to permit the insertion of a finger or thumb through either of them. A lengthwise extending groove 30, is formed on the internal wall of the socketed end of the handle in line with one of the buttons 7, 8, to permit the insertion and removal of the switch socket from the handle.
Secured to the end of the socket portion 10, of the handle, is a flanged ring .14, one
part 15, of which rests against the end of the socket portion 10, and the flange 16, of which surrounds the adjacent end portion of the handle. The ring 14:, may be fastened to the handle by screws 17. The openingin said ring is large enough for the passage of the lamp socket therethrough, and a locking ring 18 is provided, which fits in the opening of the flanged ring and rests upon the upper annular edge or end of the lamp socket A. It is removably held in place by screws 19, threaded in the flanged ring at places close to the locking ring, so that their heads may overlie said ring and hold it and the lamp socket in place. 7
The wire guard comprises a plurality of outwardly bowed Wire members, 20, which, at one end, project through holes in the part 15, of the flanged ring, and are welded to the ring. The upper ends of said wire members 20, converge toward each other, and ex-- tend inward through holes in the downturned flange of a cup shaped member 21, and are welded to said member. A hook 22, extends through a central hole in said. cup shaped member 21, and through a washer 23, that bears against the adjacent end portions of the wires 20. Said hook is secured to the cup shaped member and washer as. for mstance, by welding it thereto.
Said wires 20 partially surround the lamp globe, and at one side a wide gap is left between two wires to afford an opening large enough for the admission or removal of an electric lamp therethrough. Said gap is closed by a hinged door 24, which may be made of a piece of wire bent at its middle into a V-shaped formation, as shown at 25,
in Fig. 3, and the two portions are bent into the same shape as the wires 20. The lower upset in order that they may be held in the perforations of the ears. The cup shaped member has an elongated opening 26, for the reception of the upper V-shaped end of the door 24, and a screw 28, threaded in the top of said member may be screwed down into the crotch of the V-shalped end.
In use, the handle furnishes a convenient means for carrying the lamp about; the switch socket contained in the handle, enables the user to turn the light on and ofi' at the handle instead of at the wall socket or place where the conductor cords are plugged in. By surroundin the push buttons of the switch with a wall, they are protected from injury in case the lamp is dropped or struck against-any object, which frequently occurs in the rough handling to which portable lamps are subjected in the ordinary use. The construction of the guard provides a very substantial one, not likely to be damaged from the usual rough handling of the lamp.
More or less variation of the exact details of construction is possible without departing from the spirit of this invention; I desire, therefore, not to limit myself to the exact form of the invention shown and described, but intend in the following claims to point out all of the invention disclosed herein.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a portable electric lamp, an electric switch socket provided with two push buttons, a handle having a socketed end for the reception of said switch socket, said socketed end having holes through its wall in alinement with the push buttons, and afiording access to said push buttons, and means secured on said handle and overhanging said switch to retain the same in the socket.
2. In a portable electric lamp, an electric switch socket, provided with two laterally projecting push buttons, and a handle having a socketed end for the reception of said switch socket, and there being a lengthwise extending groove in the wall of the socket for the passage of one of the push buttons, the push buttons being located within the cylindrical plane of the outer face of the socketed end, and there being holes in the wall of said socketed end, exposing the push buttons.
3. A portable electric lamp comprising a handle having a socketed end for the receptogether the upper ends of the wires, said guard having a door comprising a' piece of wire bent at its middle to form a V-shape, its ends being pivotally secured on said ring and the V-end arranged to enter a notch in said cup shaped member, and there being a screw threaded in said cup shaped member, arranged to enter the crotch at the V-shaped end of the door.
4. In a portable electric lamp, a handle having a socketed end for the reception of an electricv switch-socket, a ring secured to said end of the handle, its central opening being large enough for the passage of the switch socket therethrough, a second ring fitting in the opening ofthe first named ring, and resting on the switch socket, and means associated with the first named ring for holding the second named ring against the switch socket.
5. In a portable electric lamp, a handle having a socketed end for the reception of a switch socket, a flanged ring secured on the socketed end of the handle, and forming a base for a wire guard, a second ring fitting in the opening of the first named and screws threaded in the flanged ring with their heads bearing against the second named ring.
6. In a portable electric lamp, a handle having a socketed end for the reception of a switch socket, a flanged ring secured on the socketed end of the handle, a wire guard having bowed wires fixedly secured to said ring, a wire door pivotally connected to-sald ring, and securing means for said door.
In a portable electric lamp, a SWltCll socket supporting handle, a flanged ring secured thereto, a plurality of circumferentially arranged, bowed wires, secured to said ring, a cup shaped washer connectmg the ends of said wires, a wire door hinged to said ring, and means carried by sald cup shaped washer for securing sald door thereto.
