Be it known 4that I, WINCENTY P. Mnx- LEMBURG, a citizen of Poland, havingdeclared my intention to become a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Adena, in the county of Jefferson and State have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

The primary obj ect of the invention is the provision of a receptacle adapted for remaining normally closed but readily opened when desired for the deposit of garbage and other refuse therein, automatic closing means being provided therefor.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a garbage receptacle sanitary in construction and easy and inexpensive to manufacture, the same being reproof and normally closed for preventing the escape of gases and fumes therefrom.

My invention will now be fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,

My invention provides a box 10 rectangular in cross section preferably formed of metalV or other fire-proof material withv a sliding lid 11 upon the top thereof and with a hinged door 12 in one side of the box.

An inwardly projecting flange 13 extends around three sides of the top or upper edge of the box 10 with the lid 11 slidably mounted beneath the flange 13 and upon a second flange or ledge 14 coextensive with and positioned beneath the flange 13.

Coil springs 15 at the opposite sides of the box 10 beneath the ledge 14 are connected to the top 11 by means of pins 16 carried by the top and extending through slots 17 in the said ledge 14. The springs 15 normally hold the lid 11 in its closed position, the said springs being compressed between the pins 16 and their point of attachment 18 with the opposite forward end of the box 10 when the lid 11 is opened. In-

wardly projecting guides 19' are provided on the sides of the box 10 beneath the ledge 14 with the springs 15 between said guides 19 and ledge.

A handle 2O upon ward end of the box 10 may be grasped for drawing the lid11 outwardly to its open position against the action of thesprings 15, a spring pressed latch 21 being pivoted upon the'front side of the box 10 for engaging teeth 22 on the under side of the lid 11 when the lid is moved to its open position. A rod 23 is transversely mounted in slotted brackets 24 upon thefront wall of the box 10 engaging over the latch 21 and adapted to be forced inwardly for releasing the latch from the teeth 22 when it is desired to close the lid 11. The releasing of the latch 21 over the lid permits the springs 15 to quickly shift the lid to its closed position as illustrated in the drawing. Refuse and garbage may be deposited in the box'lO when the lid 11 is open and upon closing the lid a tight seal is formed by the ledge`14 and flange 13 preventing the escape of gases or smoke from the box. The door 12 may be opened when desired for removing the contents of v Y the box. The device possesses great strength and is safe and sanitary in construction.

What I claim as new is 1. A receptacle comprising a box having an open top with an inwardly projecting ange around three sides of the top of the box, an inwardy projecting ledge coextensive with and positioned beneath said flange, guides carried by the sides of the box beneath the ledge, a tightly Vtting lid slidably positioned between said flange and ledge and automatic closing means for the lid when open positioned between the said ledge and guides.

A receptacle comprising a box having an open top with an inwardly projecting fiange around three sides of the top of the box, an inwardly projecting ledge coextensive with and positioned beneath said flange, a tightly fitting lid slidably positioned between said flange and ledge, guides beneath the side portions of said ledge, pins carried by the lid projecting through the ledge to a point adjacent said guides, springs between said ledge and guides with the forward ends of the springs attached to the forward sides of the box and the rearward ends of the springs attached to said pins, automatic retaining means for the lid when open the lid 11 at the forand releasing means for the retaining means whereby the springs are adapted to automatically close the lid. t
