The shaft 17: is operatiyely connected to a stub shaft 18 y, by means of a gear 19 and pinion 20, which pinion is carried by the stub shaft. The Istub shaft 18 has a sprocket 21 mounted thereon about which a sprocket chain 22 travels. The sprocket chain 22 also travels about a sprocket 23 whichis carried'by one of the rear wheels 2 for synchronous rotation therewith, which provides means for the excayating machine. y
The retaining bed12 has ashaft 25 rock y y i operating theconveyer'16 bythetravel of I mf fleeting board 26 is-positionedbeneath the. delivery end of the convcyer16, so thatthe soil falling from the conveyer will fall upon the board 26. The-shaft 25 has acrankarm 27 formed thereon, which is pivotally con nected to an arm} 28. The arm 28 ispivotally connected to the lower end of a hand lever 32',- which lever carries a dog mechanism 33. The dog mechanism 33 co-acts with a quadrant 34 for holding the hand lever 32 in various adjusted positions. By swinging the lever 32, the crank arm 27 will berocked for rocking the shaft 25 and altering the angle or incline of the board 26, so that the. soil deposited upon the board by the conveyer 16 may be deflected or thrown toward the rear end, the intermediate portion, or the front end of the bed 12, depending upon the position of-the board 26. i
The sides 36 and 37 of the bed 12 are provided with inwardly extending transversely disposed flanges or strips 88 and39, which are arranged in pairs for forming guides for the edges of the removable bottom 40 of the bed. Any suitable type of dump bottom may be employed in lieu of the bottom 40, as
illustrated in the drawings, if. so desired,
without departing from the spirit of this invention. a 1 I The ends 41 and 42 of the. bed 12 are provided with alining openings 43, through which a rod 44 may be inserted. The. rod 44 extends longitudinally through thBCGIl,
ter of the bed 12 and is provided for supporting the dirt sheds or deflectors 45 and 46. The sheds 45 and 46 have metallic plates 47 and 48' secured to their upper edges respectively, and extending throughout their entire length. The plates47 and 48 are provided with curved portions 49 and 50 respectively. The curved portion 49 is provided for resting over the upper. surface of the. rod 44, while the curved portion 50 of the plate 48 rests upon the outer surface of the curved portion 49, thereby supporting the sheds: 45.
and 46 by the rod 44. The sheds 45 and .46 extend downwardly from the rod 44 and outwardly therefrom, at an angle, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the'drawings, and they are held against accidental swingingmovement'by means of hooks and chains-51 and 52, the hooks being, secured to the sides 36 and 37,0r by any analogous structure desired. The sheds 45 and 46 have their outer;
surfaces positioned inwardly short distances from the inner edges of the lower guiding strips 39, so as to permit the dirtwhich is deposited within the bed 12, by the conveyer 16, to travel down their outer surfaces, and
be deposited alongside of the ditch which isformed by the scoop 7. The chains 51 and 52 and the hooks associated therewith, together with the plates 47 and 48, provide means whereby either of the sheds or deflectors 45 and 46 may be adjusted independently of the-other deflector for the purpose of directing a greater or less amount of the soil'to either side of the ditch preferred, to suit: conditions.
A seat 60 of ordinary construction is yieldably supported above the bed 12 and the levers 32 and 10 are positioned in close proximity. to the seat, so that the operator of.v the device may conveniently reach them.
Any suitable means may be employed for propelling the excavating or. ditching machine.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the advantages of construction and the method of operation of the improved excavating machine, will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains and, while in the foregoing description, the principle of the operation of this invention has been described together with various features of construction, it is to be understood that certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be altered to suit practical conditions provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed'is 1; In-a ditching machine, a substantially rectangular. dirt receiving body having its bottom open, excavating means carried there by and projecting forwardly of the body, means operable longitudinally of the body for discharging earth from the excavating the distance at whiclrthe soil is deposited from the ditch.
2. In an excavating machine, a substantially rectangular body open atiits bottom, excavating means carried by the body and projecting forwardly thereof, a delivery conveyer operable longitudinally of the body for delivering soil into the same from the excavating means, a shaft extending longitudinally of the body centrally thereof, two downwardly divergent deflectors, said deflectors extending through the bottom of the body and projecting laterally thereof and having their upper edges connected to the shaft so as to be rockably supported thereby, the deflectors being capable of independent adjustment about the shaft, and means for securing said deflectors in independent adjustment.
3. In an excavating machine, a body having its bottom open, excavating moans car ried thereby and projecting forwardly of the body, a shaft extending longitudinally of the body centrally thereof, downwardly divergent deflectors extending through the bottomof said body and projecting laterally thereof, arched supporting plates secured to the upper edge portion of said deflectors and fitting about the upper portion of said shaft in superposed relation so as to permit independent adjustment of the deflectors about the shaft, means for securing said deflectors in adjustment, and means EDGAR H.
