Be it known that I, LINDON WALLACE BATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Dredges, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to improvements in hydraulic dredges, and more par-' ticularly to the mechanism for controlling the discharge-stream as it issues from the floating discharge-pipe, and consequently the position of said pipe.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of a pontoon-section carrying the discharge-pipe, illustrating the arrangement of the bafile-plate working in conjunction therewith; Fig. 2, a side elevation, partly in section, the sectional portion being made upon the line 1 1 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail view; Fig. 4, an end elevation; Figs. 5, 6, and 7, details showing the arrangement of securing or mounting the guidebrackets for the baffle-plates upon theirsupports, and Figs. 8 and 9 detail views showing the brackets for supporting the gear-spindles.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved form of baffle-plate over that shown in Letters Patent of the United States No. 576,250, granted to me under date of February 2, 1897, and also an improved means for handling or controlling the same.
Referring to the'drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1 and 3, A represents the end section of a pontoon carrying the discharge-pipe B. Secured to and extending outwardly in line with the pipe B are levers or supporting-arms 0, having adjustably at tached to the outer ends thereof a cross-bar or guide D, suspended from arms E. The adjustability of this guide-bar D along the length of the lever C is secured. by a series of holes or openings formed in said levers, into which project pins or studs F, extending from the arm E, or bolts may be passed through said holes and corresponding holes formed in the upper ends of the arms. Extending out from the lower portion of the pontoon are stanchions G, which also carry at their outer ends a guide-bar H, which may be adjusted back serial No- 23,511. (No modelJ and forth thereon by the nuts which secure the same in position.
Mounted upon the guide-bars D and H are brackets I, which are built up in the manner illustrated in Figs.5,6,and 7. As will be noted, there is provided a roller J, secured in place by a bolt K, forming the axle therefor, said roller bearing upon the forward face of the guide-bars and serving to facilitate or permit easy movement of thebrackets along the bar. A removable face-plate L is provided, so that the brackets may when occasion requires be readily removed from the bars. To said brackets I there is secured a plate M, carrying a rack N, which mesheswith a gear 0, secured upon a spindle P, the spindle having its bearing in brackets Q, secured to the guide-bars D and H, as is clearly indicated in Figs. 2 and 4. The upper end of the spindle carries a bevel-gear R, which in turn mesheswith a bevel-pinion S, carried by a shaft T, the lower or outer end of which rests in a bracket or support U, secured to the upper guide-bar D. Shaft T at its inner end is carried'by any suitable support mounted on the pontoon and is provided with a capstan-wheel or other similar wheel V. Plate M has secured to its forward face a baflie-plate, which, as shown in Fig. l, is formed of two curved sections W, the corresponding ends of which are brought together'directly in front of the discharge-pipe B, the ground plan of the plate as a whole being a Newtonian tractrix, as is best seen in Fig. 1. The lower edge of each of said sections is formed upon what may be termed a helical curve--that is to say, the depth of each section increases as it recedes from the point of connection or from the apex of the plate. The object of this shape is to allow for the trajectory of the discharged stream, the more distant portions of the baffie-plate allowing for a greater fall than those nearer to the discharge-orifice. By shifting the baffle-plate to one or the other side of the axis of the discharge-pipe B the position of the pontoon or floating discharge-pipe may be varied and determined as desired.
The object of the rollers J isto diminish the friction on the guide-bar when the pressure from the discharge-jet is directed on the baffle-plate and to allow it to be moved easily and rapidly in either direction by actuation of the parts throughthe wheel V, shaft T, and the other connections described.
From the construction set forth it will be notedthat the baflie-plate may be readily detached from its supports should occasion so require.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination with the discharge-pipe of a dredge, a baffle-plate adapted to receive the impact or pressure of the outflowing current from said pipe, said baffle-plate having two diverging faces and being greater in depth at its extremities than at the point of junction of said faces.
2. In combination with the discharge-pipe of a dredge, a baffle-plate adapted to receive the impact or pressure of the outflowing current from said pipe, said baffle-plate being in ground plan a Newtonian tractrix.
3. In combination with the discharge-pipe of a dredge, a baffle-plate adapted to receive the impact or pressure of the outflowing current from said pipe, said plate beinginground plan a Newtonian tractrix and having its under face less in depth at its apex than at its extremities.
4. In combination with a pontoon, a discharge-pipe carried thereby; levers extending outwardly from the end of said pontoon; a guide-bar carried by said levers; stanchions extending out from the lower end of said pontoon a guide-bar carried by said stanchions; a baffle-plate; brackets extending out from said baffle-plate and engaging the guide-bars; and means for shifting the baflie-plate and the brackets along said bars.
5. In combination with a pontoon, a discharge-pipe carried thereby; levers O extending outwardly from said pontoon; stanchions G also extending out from said pontoon at or near the bottom thereof; guide-ha rs D, H, ad- 3' ustabl y secu red to said levers and stanchions respectively; a baffle-plate; brackets secured to said baiiie-plate; rollers mounted in said brackets adapted to bear upon the guide-bars; and means for shifting the baflie-plate.
