E. 8. SMITH.

DEAET ADJUSTMENT Eon i -Lows.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 24, 1919.
Application filed December 18, 1918. Serial No. 267,353.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE S. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Crawford, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft Adjustments for Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in draft devices and particularly to draft devices for tractor plows.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved means for quickly and elfectively adjusting the draft of the plows should the plows drift on uneven ground.
Another object is to provide a novel and improved device of this character which can be easily and conveniently reached and operated by the operator of the machine, from the seat, and without the necessity of leaving the tractor.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent from the following description when taken in connection withthe accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a tractor plow equipped with my improved adjusting device.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 4; is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 4l4 of Fig. 2.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the transverse front bar of the plow to which are connected the rearwardly extending beams 11. Secured on the upper face of one end of the bar 10 is a bracket 12, the outer portion of which is twisted into a plane at right angles to the attached portion, as shown at 13. A
vertical operating lever 141-. is pivotally connected, at 15, to this end portion 13, and eX- tends upwardly therefrom. Bolted to the other end of the bar 10 is a forwardly extending draw bar 16, and pivotally con- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ing.
nected to this draw bar, intermediate its length, is an obliquely arranged bar 17 the other end being disposed adjacent the bracket 12. Secured to the upper face of this end of the bar 17 is a rack segment 18, the lower end of which is secured to the lower end of the lever 14: by means of the bolt 19. A latch 20 is carried by the lever 14: for engagement in the teeth of the rack segment. i 1
By reason of the fact thatthe lower portion of the lever 14: is pivotally connected to the bracket 12, which bracket is rigidly secured to the bar 10, and the lower extremity of the lever is pivotally connected to the depending tab 21,"formed integrally wlth the rack segment, a movement of the lever will cause the oblique bar 17 to be drawn toward or pushed away from the bar 10, thereby adjusting the draft, and bringing the plows into proper line, should they move out of the proper path, in what is known as drift- The lever is preferably formed so that it will extend to a point within easy reach of the operator, some casesrequiring the lever to be straight, and others requiring the lever to be bent or curved. i i What is claimed is:
Anadjusting means fora tractor plow including a bracket carried by the plow, a lever pivotally connected to the bracket at a point adjacent its end, a draw ba'r carried by the plow and extending forwardly therefrom, a rearwardly and laterally inclined bar connected to the. forward end of the draw bar and extending to a point adjacent the bracket, a rack segment secured to the said end of the inclined bar and having a depending tab to which the lower extremity of the lever is pivotally connected, and means on the lever for engagin the segment to hold the lever and inclined ar in different adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
