To all whom t may concern.' I Be it known thatI, CLYDE C. CHARLES, a citizen of the United Statesfresidingat Sa` lina, in the county of Saline and State 'of Kansas, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Fuel-:Feed-Valve Locks, of which the following is aspecificatio'n.
Thist invention relates to fuel feed valve 1ocks,the broad object in view being to pro,-`
vide means for cutting off the iow of-fuel'v oil in aumotorvehicle between the storage tank or reservoir or Vothersource of fuel supply and the carbureter or engine, whereby an unauthorized person is-prevented from operating the4 vehicle and stealing the machine. l
The improvedk fuel feedl valve lock is of the combination. or permutation variety Wso that no key is requiredto be carried by the operator or owner of the machine. VIt is only necessary for him to know the combi# nation by means of whichV the fseveral parts of the locking mechanism or the valve may be positioned properly to admit of Y free 1 flow of the fuel from the tank or reservoir' to the carbureter' or engine. The lockingr mechanism isof such a character that it would require a long time on the part of a person unacquai-nted'with the combinationr to open the valve andzobtain -the necessary flow of fuel from the tankl to the engine, ree
sultingk 'in the detection .of any person .at' tempting to operate theA lock without being familiary withthe'combinatiom With the above and other objects in gviewf.:V the invention consists in the novel construc- ,y tion, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated and herein fully described, claimed.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a side elevation ofthe device.' Fig. 2 is a section taken in line with the valve shaft and fuel inlet and outlet pasf,
. give access tofthe locking vmechanism con` sages of the device.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lower sectionr of the casing showing the 'opening in the false bottom thereof.r`
Fig. 4 is a similar view with the tension-y Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the device showing the top bracket and the dial.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designatesv the base or main support of the device, the

outletr passage 3. The base is also formed f with a4 disk shaped chamber 3 above which is a disk Vshavped'partition 4 having a central Y r opening: or step for the lower end of a tumbler. `operating shaft 5. The partition 4 is formed: with anl opening 6 through 'which the chamber beyond thepartition 4.' Fast-on the Vendportionof the shaft 5 is a disk 7 having an opening 8 therein adapted to register ,withthe openingl 6 in'thepartition 4."t .The disk 7 bears lagainst'a shoulder s or head 9 at the extremity ofthe shaft 5 and is held ti htly against the same byl means .of a nut 10 yloosening which the disk 7 may Abe'adjusted axially around' the .shaft 5 for` the purpose 'of changingthe combination.
l2 designates a clamp' on the end portionof 'Y i y the shaft 5` from` which extends yal disk open ating finger 13 which, when the shaftwv is movemeiitwithin the valve casing and pro-V vided with anjopening 16 vadapted to vbe brought finto registration with the opening S0 il turned, is-adapted to"k come incontact with f 6 vin'thefpa'rtition 4 and the opening A8in the diskY 7 hereinabove referred rto.V The rotatable `tumbler disk 15 is held `against too free. rotation.; by .means of one' or'more ten- .sioningsprings V12' fastened to and extending' f from lugs 18 on the disk 15 and between l tensioning posts or lugs 19 froml the disk 15 and the Yinner peripheral Vwall ofthe i casing. Y l
The casing comprises a cylindrical section 20 anda cylindrical section 21. Theseisections are preferably separate from: 'f each other so ythat they may be disconnected to tained'therein. An expansionspring 22M'isinterposed between the top of theV casing t.
and the disk 7 so Las to hold the aisle?v `snugly against the V`tumbler 4disk 15 andvalso Y hold-` thelatterjtightly'seated a ainst' the partition, 4 to prevent leakage ro gasolene or other fuel oil which would enable/thecar box 22 carried by the casing and has fast on ing bracket 26 having a finger or 1`eoin`ter27 ters With the pointer 27, at Which time the hole 16 registers 'with the hole 6. The knob or handle 24; is then turned in the reverse direction until the proper graduation of the dial is brought into registration with the finger 27 so as to position the hole 8 in the disk 7 in line with the hole 16 of the tumbler disk 15. This provides for a free How of fuel oil from the tank or reservoir 4 to the engine. vWhen a person is unacquainted With the combination it will take a long time to obtain the flovv. of fuel oil to the engine, thereby notifying the public'that an unauthorized person is tampering With the machine.
I claim:Y Y
1. Thev combination with the fuel feed line of a motor vehicle, of a valve controlling the flow of fuel through said pipe, said valve comprising a casing having a fuel'reeeiving chamber anda fuel inlet'passage leading thereto, -a partition having a fuel opening therein, a rotatable tumbler disk supported in contact with Vsaid partition and having an opening therethrough adapted to register With the aforesaid opening in the partition, a post extending from said tumbler disk, a tumbler operating shaft extending through and projecting from said casing, a disk fast Copies f this patent may be obtained for on the end portion of said shaft and having an opening therethrough adapted to register with the opening in the tumbler disk, a tumbler actuating finger projecting from said shaft and adapted to coperate with said post on the tumbler disk, the valve casing having an outlet passage leading ofi:l from the space beyond said disk, means for turning said tumbler actuating shaft, and graduated means for indicating the proper degree of turning movement of said tumbler actuating shaft.
2; The combination with the fuel feed line of a. mdtor vehicle, of a valve controlling the flow of fuel through said pipe, said valve comprising a easing having a fuel receiving chamber and a fuel inlet passage leading thereto, a partition having a fuel opening therein, a rotatable tumbler disk supported in contact With said partition and having an opening therethrough adapted to register With the aforesaid opening in the partition, a post extending from said tumbler disk, a tumbler operating shaft extending through and projecting from said casing, a disk fast on the end portion of said shaft and having an opening therethrough adapted to register with the opening inthe tumbler disk, a tumbler actuating finger projecting from said shaft and adapted to coperate with said post on the tumbler disk, the `valve casing having an outlet passa-ge leading oil' from the space beyond said disk, means for turning said tumbler actuating shaft, and graduated means for indicating the proper degree of turnino movement of said tumbler actuating shaft, and yieldable means for pressing said disks against each other and against the partition.
In testimony whereof I afiiX-mysignatu1'e.
