UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLAV G. OLSEN, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
VALVE.
Specification of Letters Yatent.
Patented May 25, 1920.
Application filed March 6, 1920, Serial No. 363,876.
' in the fuel supply line leading to the carbureter of an internal combustion engine, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character including a'novel and improved operating means for the valve and coacting therewith in a manner whereby the possibility of the operation of the valve by unauthorized persons is substantially eliminated.
Another object of the invention is topro-- vide a valve including novel and improved operating means of a permutation type.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved valve whereby certaln important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that m invention may be the better understood, will now proceedto describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary vlew partly section and partly in elevation, illustrating a valve constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in front elevation of the structure as disclosed in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a view in top plan of the cylinder as herein embodied; and
Fig. 5 are views in elevation of the slotted disks herein employed, said disks being separated.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, C denotes a valve casing and 1 denotes a valve stem extending a desired distance exteriorly of the casing C and which is preferably angular in cross section. The casing C is adapted to be interposed in a fuel feed line leading to the carbureter of an internal combustion engine and the valve V, working within the casing, is of a rotary or turn type.
2 denotes a cylinder open at one end and said open end portion of the cylinder is en gaged with an annular flange 3 carried by the casing C and substantially concentric with the stem 1. Extending within the cylinder 2 through the outer or closed end thereof is an elongated spindle S. The inner or inserted end of the spindle S, at its axial center, is provided with an elongated bore or recess 4 and the outer end portion 5 of said recess or bore 4 is outwardly tapered or substantially conoidal.
The periphery of the spindle S within the cylinder 2 is provided with a longitudinally disposed pocket 6 in which is pivotally engaged the upper end portion'of alocking pawl or key 7 The pivoted end portion of the pawl or key 7 is provided with an upstanding tail 8 with which coacts an expansible member 9, herein disclosed as a coil spring, and which operates to constantly urge the lower or free end portion of the pawl or key 7 outwardly. The upper portion of the cylinder 2 has arranged therein a sleeve 10, affording an annular'shoulder a with which the'lower or free end portion of the pawl or key 7 is adapted to engage and whereby the spindle S is maintained against downward movement. When the key or pawl 7 is engaged with the shoulder a, the spindle S is held in an elevated or outward position and when the spindle S is in such position, the outer or free end portion of the stem 1 partially extends within the tapered end portions 0 thereto the disks 22 provided with the radiperipheral wall of the cylinder vided with an opening 11 defined standing'fiange'12 and whereby a bearing is afforded for the nested sleeves 14 and 15. The sleeves 14 and 15 extend inwardly of the cylinder 2 and the sleeve 14 extends beyond the opposite ends of the sleeve 15. The outer end-of the sleeve 14 is provided with an operating head or knob 16 -and is also provided with graduations or indications 17 adapted to coact with an index 18 provided on the outer face of a knob or head 19 carried by the outer end of the sleeve 15. The sleeve 15 is also provided with the graduations or indications 2O coacting with the index 21 carried b the flange 12. The inner g, the sleeves I have aiffixed 2 is proally disposed slots 23 which also extend through the adjacent end portions of the sleeves 14 and 15-, and said slots 23, when in register and vertically disposed, communicate with a slot 24 extending through the sleeve 10. WVhen the slots 23 and 24 are in proper alinement or register, the extended end portion of the key or pawl 7 will readily pass therethrough so be properly engaged with the stem 1 and which engagement is facilitated by the tapered or conoidal portion 5 of the bore or recess 4 in the spindle S.
The exterior portion of the spindle S is provided with an index 25 coacting with the graduations or indications 26 produced on the adjacent end of the cylinder 2.
With the spindle S in its raised or outer position and it is desired to operate the valve V,-the sleeves l4 and 15 are rotated in accordance with the reading known to the operator to bring the slots 23 into register and in vertical alinement with the slot 24 in the member 10. The spindle S is then rotated in accordance with the reading known to the operator to bring the pawl or key 7 in a position to pass through the slots 23 and 24.
\Vhen it is desired to raise the spindle S or move the same outwardly, no particular rotary adjustment of the spindle S is required because the inner portion of the member 10 is beveled and which causes the pawl or key 7 to readily pass thereover as the spin dle S is moved upwardly or outwardly. It is also preferred that the sleeves 14 and 15 be rotated to bring the slots 23 thereof out of registeror alinement after the spindle S has been moved upwardly or outwardly.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a valve constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susc'e tible of some change and modification wit?- by an out-' that the spindle S may n a hollow member carried by the casing and after claimed.
I claim:
l. The combination with a valve casing, a
rotary valve therein and a stem carried by the valve extending exteriorly of the casing, a hollow member carried by the casing and into which the stem extends, a spindle extending within the hollow member and capable of rotary movement and endwise movement, the inserted end of the spindle being provided with a recess to receive an end portion of the stem when the spindle is moved in a direction toward the stem, said spindle and stem interlocking for unitary rotation when the stem is engaged within the recess of the spindle, said hollow member being provided with an interior annular shoulder, said shoulder being intersected by a slot, a latch carried by the spindle for engagement with the shoulder to maintain the spindle in a position out of engagement with the stem, said latch being movable through the slot intersecting the shoulder, and means for normally closing the slot.
2. The combination with a valve casing, a rotary valve therein and a stem carried by the valve extending exteriorly of the easing,
into which the stem extenc s, a spindle extending within the hollow member and capable of rotary movement and endwise movement, the inserted end of the spindle being provided with a recess to receive an end portion of the stem when the spindle is moved in a direction toward the stem, said spindle and stem interlocking for unitary rotation when the stem is engaged within the recess of the spindle, said hollow member being provided with an interior annular shoulder, said shoulder being intersected by a slot, a latch carried by the spindle for engagement with the shoulder to maintain the spindle in a position out of engagement with the stem, said latch being movable through the slot intersecting the shoulder, and permutation means for normally closing the slot.
3. The combination with a valve casing, a rotary valve therein and a stem carried by the valve extending exteriorly of the casing, a hollow member carried by the casing and into which the stem extends, a spindle extending within the hollow member and capable of rotary movement and endwise movement, the inserted end of the spindle being provided with a recess to receive an end portion of the stem when the spindle is moved in a direction toward the stem, said spindle and stem interlocking for unitary rotation when the stem is engaged within the recess of the spi dle, said hollow member being provided with an interior annular shoulder, said shoulder being intersected by a slot a latch carried by the spindle for engagement with the shoulder to maintain the spindle in a position out of engagement with the stem, said latch being movable through the slot intersecting the shoulder, and means for normally closing the slot, said spindle and hol- In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
