FUNNEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 6, 1921.
Application filed September 11, 1920. Serial No. 409,548.
'To all whom 2'! may concern:
Be it known that I MERLE E. Orr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clear Lake, in the county of Cerro Gordo and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Funnel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to funnels and more particularly to a measuring funnel.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a funnel which may be mounted in a receptacle into which liquid is to be poured and which will contain mechanism adapted to automatically operate as the level of liquid rises in the container so that the user may determine when to cease pouring the liquid and so that the user may determine when the container is full.
Other objects of the invention will appear upon consideration of the following detail description and accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical section through the device constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken transversely to that shown in Fig. 1
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, the funnel body '1 is provided with a spout 2 adapted to be inserted in the mouth of a bottle or container. Above the spout and extending across the body of the irmnel is a shelf 3. An operating rod :1 is extended centrally through the spout and has its lower end provided with a float 5, while its upper end projects through an opening in the shelf and has a finger 6 turned at right angles and equipped with a slide member 7 at its terminal. Encircling the spout is a ring 8 loosely mounted to be readily adjusted longitudinally and an adjusting rod 9 is formed with the ring 8 and extends upwardly parallel with the spout above the funnel, at which point it is bent at right angles as shown at 10 to form a guide rod 11 through which the operating rod 4: is is extended. Forwardly of the operating rod and secured to the portion 11 is a plate 12 having a suitable inscription thereon such as the words Stop and the words Full as shown in Fig. 2. The slide memher 7 embraces the plate 12 and is longitudinally movable thereon. Slidably mounted on the rod 4 is a deflector 13 in the form of an inverted conical member adapted to freely slide on the rod 4 and having its largest diameter approximately equal to the diameter of the float 5. An extension 14 of the rod 9 is extended down through the shelf 3 and parallel with the rod 4 and has its terminal fixed to the deflector 13.
When the funnel spout is placed. in the neck of a container and the liquid poured through the funnel into the container the deflector 13 will cause the liquid to be deflected around the float 5 so that the float will not be forced downwardly by the weight of the liquid. This will assist in accomplishing the action of the mechanism quickly.
The ring 8 may be raised or lowered on the spout according to the depth which the spout extends into the container, and as the level of liquid rises the float 5 will also rise and cause the slide 7 to move upwardly on the plate 12. When the slide reaches the point indicated by the word Stop the user will cease pouring the liquid, and the liquid which is then in the funnel will cause a slightly additional rise to the float causing the slide member 7 to indicate that the container is full.
Minor changes may be made in the details. of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
What I claim is 1. A funnel comprising a body having a spout attached thereto and provided with a shelf above the spout, a rod centrally located in the spout, a float member attached to the lower end of the rod, the upper end of the rod being inserted through the shelf and equipped with a slide member, a guide ring encircling the spout, a rod parallel with the spout and attached to the guide member, a plate supported on the upper end of the rod, the said slide member embracing the said plate.
2. A funnel comprising a body having a spout attached thereto and provided with a shelf above the spout, a rod centrally located in the spout, a float member attached to the lower end of the rod, the upper end of the rod being inserted through the shelf and equipped with a slide member, a guide ring encircling the spout, arod parallel with the spout and attached to the guide member, a
plate supported on the upper-end of the rod, In testimony whereof, I have aflixed my tlie said slide memberdembracing?1 tlllle saild signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
p ate, an extension r0 ro'ecte t rou i the spout parallel to the ioa t rod, a dfi cp I 5 tor slidably mounted on the float rod above Witnesses;
the float, and connected to the said extension CHAs. FINDSON.
