Be it known that I, MARTHA KELLY, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Mill Hall, in the county of Clinton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scrub-Brushes, of

which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in brushes and the principal object of the invention is to provide means whereby the iingers of the user of the brush are protected from injury by coming-in contact with the walls or other objects when the brush is in use.

The invention is more particularly adapted for scrubbing 4brushes though it may be used with other brushes. y

The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement-of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated inthe accompanying drawings and specifically pointed'out in the appended claim.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding' parts throughout ,the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a brush constructed in accordance with my invention;

Fig. 2 is a view of an ordinary brush which is provided with a hand-engaging bar made in accordance with my invention;

Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

As shown in Fig. l the brush consists of the back l and the bristles 2 which are secured to the back in any desired manner. The backs of brushes of this class are ordinarily provided with curved` edges which are seized by the lingers of lthe user so that the brush may be rubbed on the surface to be cleansed. When operating the brush near the walls or objects of furniture or the like, there is danger of coming too close so that the fingers are injured by being pinched between said objects and the back of the brush. The object of my' inventiony is to prevent this injury to the fingers and to do this I provide the recesses 8 in the side edges of the brush back to receive the fingers. this way the projecting parts L between the recesses will come in contact with the walls or objects and thus prevent the fingers from being pinched. p

As shown in Figs. and 3, brushes provided with the ordinary backs may be sup-- plied with my invention 'by 'securing to said backs a strip 5 which is provided with the recesses 3 and projections 4 to receive and protect the fingers. This strip may be secured to the back in any desired manner. As shown, however, I'groove the strip longitudinally and form openings in the bottom of the groove to receive the screws 6.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.

I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.

WYhat I claim is In combination with a brush, a strip having a recess in one face to receive part of the brush back and having its side edges corrugated to form finger receiving recesses separated by rounded projections and means for securing` the strip to the brush back.
