Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1921.
Application filed December 14, 1920. Serial No. 430,679.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM T. IVHnArLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Signs, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to signs and has for its chief characteristic the provision of a frame divided by partitions into a plurality of blocks receiving compartments or spaces, with means for removably holding the blocks in proper position upon the frame, and the partitions constructed to afford the frame maximum strength and rigidity.
In carrying out the invention I also provide the blocks bearing the indicia with grooves to accommodate a locking bar which holds the blocks immovably positioned upon the frame, so that by arranging the grooves of the respective blocks end to end, said blocks may be held in proper relation to each other irrespective of the size of the blocks.
Other objects and advantages will appear when the following'detail description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the comblnation, construction and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of thls application like numerals of reference indicate the similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a front view of the plete.
,Fig. 2 is a rear elevation.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the frame.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the combined spacing elements and partitions Fig. 5 is a sectional View taken on line 55 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a similar view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 is a detail view of one of the blocks.
Referring to the drawings in detail 10 indicates the frame of the sign which is constructed from a single length of angle-iron or the like and bent into the desired form. In this particular instance the frame is elongated, while the opposed longitudinal flanges 11 are provided with alined openings 12 for a purpose to be presently described. The frame is divided into a plurality of locking receiving compartments or spaces by means of the elements illustrated in detail in Fig. 4. These elements are substantially T- sign comshaped and any-number of these elements may be used as found necessary, this of course depending on the size of the sign. The elements are suitably spaced apart with the head 13 of each element vertically disposed in the opening of the frame with the opposedends contacting the opposed edges of the opening as illustrated in Fig. 1. The shank 14 of each element is longer than the head, projecting above and below the ends of the latter, each shank having a reduced terminal 15 of a size to be received within the adjacent opening 12 in the opposed flanges 11 of the frame. The reduced terminals 15 after being inserted in said openings are offset to securely hold each element immovably associated with the frame as will be understood. It will be noted that the heads 13 of these elements lie flush with the front side of the frame, while the shanks 14 constitute partitions which divide the frame into the spaces the blocks 16.
These blocks carry on one side a letter or figure so that any suitable combination of blocks may be used in connection with the sign, while the opposed side of each block is formed with a groove 20. The shanks 14 of the T-shaped elements'lie flush with the rear side of the frame and are provided with openings 21 to receive a locking bar 22 for holding the blocks properly positioned in their respective compartments. With the heads 13 of the T-shaped elements securely fitted between the opposed edges of the sign opening, and the shanks 14 secured to the opposed flanges 11 of the frame, the latter is removed in a manner to afford it maximum strength and rigidity. Carried by the opposed ends of the frame are suitable attaching lugs 24.
IVhile it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
\Vhat I claim is 1. A sign comprising a frame, permanently fixed partitions dividing the frame into block receiving compartments, said partitions having alined central openings, blocks arranged in said compartments, and a locking bar passed through said openings or compartments to receive at the rear of said blocks for holding said blocks in position.
2. A sign comprising a frame, partitions dividing the frame into block receiving compartments, blocks arranged in said com partments and each having a transverse groove, said partitions having alined openings, and a locking bar passed through said openings and arranged in the grooves of said blocks for the purpose specified.
3. A sign comprising a frame having a sign opening, a plurality of combined spacing elements, each having a portion arranged Within the sign openings and a por-, tion arranged at one side thereof and constituting a partition, said partitions dividing the frame into separate block receiving compartments, blocks arranged Withinsaid compartments, and means for holding said blocks in position upon the frame.
a. A sign comprising a frame of angle formation in cross section and defining a sign opening, a plurality of T-shaped elements, the head of said elements being verticallydisposed Within the sign opening, and
secured to the uppenan'd lower portions of.
the frame and dividing the latter into block receiving compartments, and means for holding said blocks operatively associated with the frame. I
5. A sign comprising a frame of angle formation in cross section and including upper and lower parallel flanges, the frame defining a sign opening, said flanges having openings, substantially T-shaped elements having their head portions arranged Within the sign opening and contacting the said edges of the frame, theshanks of said elements being arranged in said flanges, said shanks having reduced terminals fitted in said openings in the flanges and secured to the latter, said elements dividing the frame into block receiving compartments, and
means for holding said blocks associated With the frame. a a
