To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OASTEN IVAN TISELL, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing in Kungsgatan 72, Stockholm, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Explosives and Processes for Manufacturing Them, (for which I have filed application in Sweden May 18, 1917; Germany, May 15, 1918; Denmark, May 17, 1918, and Norway, May 16, 1918,) of which the following is a specification.
It is known how to manufacture co-called safety explosives, containing nitro-hydrocarbons, ammonium perchlorate or similar substances which give ofl? oxygen, as well as aluminium powder, with or without admixture of wood-meal, pulverized carbon or other substances. The object of the admixture of aluminium powder in these explosives is to increase the temperature of the explosion and thereby to increase the effect of the explosive.
These explosives are however not quite stable, inasmuch as the aluminium powder becomes oxidized during the storage of the explosive for some length of time. This drawback is eliminated entirely, or is essentially diminished according to the present invention whereby part of the aluminium is replaced by ferro-silicon with a high percentage of silicon, suitably 90 to 95% Si, so that the explosive, together with the aluminium powder will contain ferro-silicon with a high percentage of silicon. Hereby is also attained the advantage that, owing to the higher combustion heat of the aluminium, the heat evolved in the combustion will be transferred more rapidly to the explosion gases and will impart a higher temperature to the latter than if ferro-silicon solely were to be employed instead of aluminium.
The following may serve as an example of the composition of an explosive in accordance with the present invention:
2-3 parts by weight of aluminium powder,
6-9 parts by weight of high per cent. ferro-silicon,
8-13 parts by weight of wood meal, pulverized carbon, pulverized cellulose, or the like,
10-15 parts by weight of mono-, di-, or trinitro benzol, or else solid or liquid mono-, dior trinitro toluol,

In lieu of the above mentioned nitrohydro carbons, other nitro hydro-carbons may be used. If liquid nitro-hydro-carbons are employed, they may suitably be gelatinized to the desired degree with nitro-cellulose, also some collodion, e. (7. 3-5 parts by weight may be added. In order to neutral- 1ze chlorin or hydro-chloric acid released in the explosion, which is of great importance in underground blasting, e. g. in mines or tunnels, an equivalent quantity of alkalimetal nitrate, e. g. nitrate of Sodium or nitrate of the alkaline earth metals, such as nitrate of barium or strontium, may be added, whereby the chlorin which would otherwise be released is combined with the alkali-metal or with the alkaline earth metal.
The following may serve as an example of the composition of such an explosive:
2-3 parts by weight of aluminium powder,
6-9 parts by weight of high per cent. ferro-silicon,
8-13 parts by weight of wood powder, pulverized carbon, pulverized cellulose or the like,
8-15 parts by weight of mono-, di-, or trinitro benzol, or else mono-, di-, or trinitrotoluol,
25-35 parts by weight of sodium nitrate or nitrate of barium or strontium,
35-55 parts by weight of ammonium perchlorate,
2-15 parts by weight of paraflin, wax, or similar substance.
The paraflin is added to the mixture suitably in a melted state, whereby the advantage of a more intimate mixture is attained.
Having thus described my invention I declare that what I claim is 2-- 1. A safety explosive of the class described containing nitro-hydrocarbons, oxygen yielding substances, combustible carbonaceous substances, aluminium-powder and ferro-silicon containing 90 to 95% of silicon.
2. A safety explosive of the class described containing nitro-hydrocarbons, ammonium perchlorate, combustible carbonaceous substances, aluminium-powder and ferro-silicon containing 90 to 95% of silicon.
3. A safety explosive of the class described containing nitro-hydrocarbons, perchlorates and nitrates, combustible carbonaceous substances, aluminium-powder and ferro-silicon containing 90 to 95% of silicon.
