Description

PATENT OFFICE.
UNITED STATES.
OSCAR BIRGER CABLSON AND EMIL FILIP O'I'TERDAHL, OF MANSBO, AVESTA, SWEDEN.
. EXPLOSIVE.
N 0 Drawing.
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that we, OSCAR BIRGER CARL- SON, a subject of the King of Sweden, and resident of Mansbo, Avesta, in the Kingdom of Sweden, and EMIL FILIP OTTERDAHL, a subject of the King of Sweden, and resident of Mansbo, Avesta, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' Explosives, of which the following is a specification.
Dynamite is, in spite of its many advantages, objectionable with regard to its liability of freezing which is due to its content of nitroglycerin and which makes it more or less unfit for use in many cases. For this reason investigations have been made to find explosives having the same favorable qualities as dynamite but a much lower freezing point than the same.
Applicants have by the present invention succeeded in manufacturing a plastic explosive which has all the favorable qualities of dynamite but a much lower freezing point due to its not containing nitroglycerin. Moreover, the present explosive has the advantage of being much cheaper than the dynamite.
'The present explosive contains an oxygen carrier, such as perchlorate of ammonium, ferro-silicon for raising the explosion temperature and a combustible which consists of fractions from rock-oil rich in naphthenes (so called Russian rock-oil) and having a high boiling point (above 250 C.). The fractions of rock-oil which have a lower boiling point are not adapted for'this purpose and are, consequently, not covered by the present invention.
If the explosive is intended for use in mines a substance is added which is adapted for binding the hydrochloric gases generated, for instance sodium nitrate. For certain purposes it has been found sultable to add a substance obtained by gelatinizlng liquid trinitrotoluene with nitrocellulose.
The quantities of the ingredients can be varied within wide limits, and substances may be added which are adapted to give the explosive a certain 'quality that is valuable Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 27, 1918.
for a certain purpose. Such a substance is wood meal which is added for increasing the speed of detonation.
Some examples of different compositions are given below:
0 b wei ht. I. Ammonium perchlorate .11 '75 Ferro-silicon 5-15 Fractions of rock-oil with high boiling point 2-15 0 b Wei ht. II. Ammonium perchlorate j -85 Ferro-silicon 5-15 VTood meal 1-10 Fractions of rock-oil with high boiling point 2-15 Liquid trinitrotoluene gelatinized with nitrocellulose 520 The above mentioned ferrosilicon can raise the explosion temperature on account of the amount of heat which is rendered free due to its alteration by the explosion. This substance is also added for increasing the spc cific gravity of the explosive and for binding at least a part of the chlorin generated.
The manufacturing of the present explosive principally consists in mixing the ingredients together. For example, when manufacturing the explosive indicated above under II, the ammonium perchlorate is first intimately mixed with wood meal, then the fractions of rock-oil and the gelatin and finally the ferro-silicon are added. The mixture is then carefully kneaded together and then formed into cartridges.
Applicants are aware of the fact that it is known to use illuminating petroleum or lighter fractions of rock-oil in manufacturing explosives. Such petroleum is, however, a distillation product of crude rock-oil and has a relatively low boiling point, andis, consequently, relatively volatile. Such an ex losive cannot be maintained unaltered or a longer time as the combustible of the same is volatile. A reliable explosive can only be obtained if the combustible is non-volatile or has a very high boiling point.
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The herein described explosive which contains perchlorate of ammonium, ferrosilicon and a combustible, consisting of fractions from rock-oil rich in naphthenes and having a boiling point of above 250 C.
2. The herein described explosive which contains perchlorate of ammonium, ferrosilicon, Wood-meal and a combustible, consisting of fractions from rock-oil rich in naphthenes and having a boiling point of above 250 C.
3. The herein described explosive which contains perchlorate of ammonium, ferrosilicon, wood-meaha combustible consisting of fractions from rock-oil rich in naphthenes and having a boiling point of above 250 C. and a substance obtained by gelatinizing liquid trinitrotoluene with nitro-cellulose.
4. The herein described explosive which contains perchlorate of ammonium, ferrosilicon, Wood-meal, a combustible, consisting of fractions from rock-oil rich in naphthenes and having a boiling point of above 250 C. a substance obtained by'gelatinizing liquid trinitrotoluene with nitro-cellulose and nitrate of sodium.
In witness whereof we have hereunto signed our names.
