HAIR-CLIPPER.
Application led May 23, 1921.
To all w/iom t may Conc-67%.'
Be it known that I, FRANK LEO, a citizen ef the UnitedStates, and resident of Milwaulee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of 1Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Clippers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in hair clippers and more particularly in the mechanism for driving the reciprocating cutter thereof.
One of the important objects'of the invention is to provide means whereby the rapidity of reciprocation may be increased.
nother object of the invention is to provide means, whereby the driving means will be continuously operated in one direction while the handles are oscillated to and fro.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention comprises certain details of construction which will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a horizontal plan view of the clipper with the housing cutaway to show the operating mechanism, and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring more specifically to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a base member to which the member 2 is pivotally connected. rllhe member 1 is extended to form the handle 3 which cooperates with the handle portion '-1 of the member 2.
r* housing 5 is also formed integral with the base member 1, and projecting upwardly 'in this housing is a pivot pin 6, on which is journaled the hub 7 of the spur gear 8. The pivoted member 2 is formed with a hollow socket 9 within which is a ball clutch 1Q, which operates to rotate the gear 8 when the handle 4 is moved inwardly, but slips freely when the handle is moved outwardly. The pivot member 2 projects beyond the pivot, as shown at 11, and is connected by aI spring 12 to the side of the housing 5, whereby the pivot member may be oscillated manually in one direction and returned by the spring 12. The extremity of the projecting portion 11 is pivoted at 13 to a rock arm 141, which is connected by a ball clutch 15 to the spur gear 16 in such a manner that when the pivot member is returned by the spring 12,

it will drive the gear 16. and when the'pivot member is being rocked in the opposite direction, the clutch 15 will slip. The pivotconnection 13 is loose enough to allow for the difference in centers between the rock arm 14 and the pivot arm 2. The gear 8 when driven, will drive the gear 16 through the intermediate gear 1T, and the gear 16 is operatively connected to the gear 18, which is provided with a wrist pin 19, which operates the rock arm 20, The opposite end 21 of the rock arm is operatively connected with the reciprocating cutter 22, which cooperates with the ledger blade 23, which is secured to the base member 1. The recipro cating cutter is held in operative relation with the ledger blade by any usual means, such as the pin and slot connection 24.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have not only provided means for increasing the speed of the reciprocating cutter, but I have provided means whereby the gear 18, which operates the cutter, will be continuously driven in the same direction while the pivot member' 2 is oscillated to and fro about the pivot 6.
While I have shown the specific details of one form in which my invention may be embodied, it will be understood that the principles thereof, are capable of application in other combinations, wherever it is desirable to drive a rotating member continuously in one direction by means of an oscillating member.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a base member having a ledger blade secured thereto, a housing secured on said base member', a member pivoted to the base member, a t-rain of gears rotatably mounted on said housing, a reciprocating cutter driven by said train and cooperating with the ledger blade, a clutch connectingl one of said gears to the pivoted member to be driven when said pivoted member is moved in one direction, a second clutch connecting another of said gears to the pivoted member to be driven when the pivoted member is moved in the opposite direction` whereby said reciprocating member may be constantly driven by the oscillation of said pivot member.
2. A device of the character described comprising a base member having a ledger blade secured thereto. a housing formed on said base member, a member pivoted to the base member, a gear mounted concentric with the pivot, a reciprocating cutter cooperating with the ledger blade gearing operatively connecting said reciprocating cutter to the first named gear, said base member and pivot member being extended on the opposite side of the pivot to provide cooperating handles for rocking the pivoted member in one direction, a spring for returning the member when the handles are released, a clutch connecting the pivot member to the rst named gear to rotate the same when the handles are moved toward each other and means `including a clutch connecting the pivoted member to the other gearing to rotate in the same direction when the handles are moved in the opposite direetion, whereby said reciprocating member may be constantly driven by the oscillation 0In said pivoted member.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Tisconsin FRANK LEO.
