. A?@movablebladei 18 4 cooperates with the operation. .Thisblade' 18 has a bearing sur aeerunning fon the-upper surface of the blade 16. and is guided in-itsmovement' with respect'to the blade-lfto perform the cuttin lade 16 bytongues .19 runnin ina trans- .verseslo'tfor groove 20 in said-blade 16.

compression plate 21 has ears o r flanges .25 fitting over the sides of the housing to hold said plate inproper position Irespect to I the blade 18. v The usual flexible drive shaft 26 driven from an electric -motor or other v.suitable `source of power isprovided witha bearing sleeve 27 fitting 'within the bore 11 and havi l ing'an annular groovgf'28., The ihpusing'gg 7 y has a bore 29 thereini communicating with the bore 11 through 'a contracted-'opening'30 'V forming a seat for a clutch ball 31 which is held in 'locking engagement with the groove 28 by a spring 32 interposed/between the ball anda setscrewf33 mounted in the threaded upper end ofthe bore 29. The end 34 of the shaft 26 "is .provided withvthe usual key'35 engagingin a ke slot 36 in the hollow end of a shaft 37. y this con-- struction the shaft 34l may be quickly secured to ,or Adetached from the shaft 37 anik` the sheath secured to or detached from the housing. .5
--The shaft .37 is journaled at one Lend in a bushing 38 secured in the inner end of the bore 11 by a set screw 38 and at its `other end in a bushing 3,9 in abearing lug 40, said bushing 39 contactingwith a shoulder on the shaft 37 to form an end thrust bearing.
This shaft 37 has a worm 41 formed inte ral therewith and meshing .with a worm W eel 42 journaled on a stud shaft 43 mounted in- 25 l llocated in the rear edge of the blade 18.
Where the lever projects throughthe housing a notch 50 is provided to permit free.
swinging of the'lever, and-to prevent any hair, dust or foreign matter from working into the housing through this space, felt wicks 51 containing oil or other suitable packing members'are seated in recesses52 in the housing and bear against the rounded portion 53 of the lever adjacent its pivot,
i said wicks being compressed to some extent between the housing and its cover to provide an eiiicientseal, though the compression plate also assits in excluding foreign matter from the housing.
B this construction the rotation of the sharyts 26 and 37-wil1 through th'eworm gearing 41, 42 and crank 44 and block 45 oscillate the lever 47, which will reciprocate the blade 18 transversely' of the ixed blade 16.
To obtain more ecient cutting of the hair the fixed blade 16 is provided with a greater number of teeth than the movable blade 18 and in the present instance I have shown two teeth on the fixed blade to one on the movable blade. ABy this arrangement the spacing between the teeth of the lower comb blade 16 being smaller, the hair will be split up into smaller tufts for cutting and thus make the cutting easier. The stroke of the cutting blade is also made longer than rthe distance between Itwo teeth on the stationary bl'ade, vwhich insures the teeth in the upper blade fully clearing those in the'lower blade` before reverse action. The underside of the blade' 16 is provided with corrugations 54. With the above construction of. blades the teeth in both cutting plates' clear and cut clean without a pull on 'the hair.
In the above construction removal-ofthe v compresslonplates permits the blade 18 be'- ing lifted. o of the blade 16 and removal of the cover plate permits the lever to be lifted from/ its pivot, the block to be removed from the crank pin `and the worm A Wheel to be removed from its pivot and out of engagement withthe worm for the purpose of cleaning if desired. A guard 55 fits over the'teeth of the cutter when the device yis not in use. f
I desire it tolbe understood that this invention is not ylimited to any speciiic form or arrangement of parts except in sofar las such limitations are specified in the claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure i by 'Letters Patent is:
1. In a motor driven clipper, the combina? tion of' 'a housing for the cutter driving mechanism, a relatively fixed cutter secured to said housing, amovable cutter mounted on the fixed cutter, driving mechanism for the movable cutter including an oscillatory leverprojecting through an opening in said housing, and packing strips in thehousing v adjacent the pivot point of the lever to prevent oreign matter from entering into said housing. v
2; In a motor driven clipper, the combination of an oblong-shaped housing having an inclined front end and forming a handle having a cavity therein communicating through a slot with the front end of the housing, a relatively fixed cutter secured to said inclined end, 4a movable cutter bearing on the iixed cutter, a pivot p'ost vertically mounted in the slot, a flat oscillatory lever extending from within thecavity through said slot and operatively connected to said movable cutter and journaled on said post, a gear drive within the cavity for operating said lever, and a cover plate for said cavity.
3. In a motor driven clipper, the combination .of a fiat-faced housing having an inclined front face, a ixed cutter secured to' said face, a post disposed at right angles to the top of the housing and above said face,
a movable cutter mounted on the fixed cutter,
to the upper face ofthe housing.
4. In a motor driven clipper, the combination of a fiat-.faced oblong housing having a rearward extension provided with a curved side forming a finger hold and an opening adjacent said side for suspending the device from a support, a fixed cutter on the front end of the housing, a movable cutter adjacent the fixed cutter, an oscillatory lever projecting through an opening in said housing and operatively connected with the movable cutter, means Within the housing for operating said lever, and means at the open- 10 ing through which said lever passes to exclude foreign matter from said housing.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
