2 SHEETSSHEET 2.
INVENTOR Greg 0 T1 Pxc/v lro A TTOHNEY UNITED STATES? SAFETY-.ENVELOP.
Application filed June 16,
To all'whomz'tmag concern: g H I Be it known'that I, GREGORY PAoHKo, a citizen of Russia, residing at Detroit, county of lVayne, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Envelops, of which the following is a specification. I
i This invention relates to improvements in envelops particularly to so-called' safety envelops which cannot be opened without the attempt being made known.
The principal object of the inventlon 1s to provide an envelop cut from a s ngle blank and which-cannot be opened after its original sealing except by tearing the same. A furtherobject is to provide an .envelop which can be cheaply manufactured and readily be closed.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction-and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming'a material part of this disclosure, and 1n which- 1 Figure 1 is a top plan velop blank.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the two side flaps of the blank folded and having their outer ends inter-engaged.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of an envelop made according to the present invention folded and sealed. I
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a modified form of envelop blank.
Fig. 5 is an edge view of the blank, Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 2showing the two, side flaps of the blank Fig. 4 folded, and Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing a rear elevation of a modified form of envelop sealed. 7
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawing, the numeral 10 designates the main portion of the blank, with which'is formed a top folding flap 11, adapted to be folded'upon the body 10 along a line 12. V
The side flaps 13 and 14 are adapted to be folded upon the body 10 along lines 15 and 16 respectively, and the lower flap 17 along view of the ena linev 18.
The top flap 11 shows in approximately its center a square 19 formed by the bases of 4triang1es 22 shaped from the material of the flap by diagonal slits 20 and '21, the

upper of the triangles 22'designated with 23 is open as the material has been removed. The lower flap 17 is provided at its apex 24-with a tab 25 separated from the flap 17 by slits 26. One of the side flaps, 13 is provided at its apex with a tab 27 separated by slits 28 from the flap.
The opposite side flap 14 isprovided near its end with a square 29, similar to the square 19 formed by the bases of 4 triangles 30 shaped from the material of the flap by diagonal slits 31 and 32, the material of the outer of the triangles 30 being removed."
From the foregoing description it will be clear that the envelop will be formed by folding the side flaps 13 and 14 along the lines 15 and 16 respectively upon the body 1.0 and passing the fiap'27 in a somewhat folded condition through the outer open triangles 30. 1 The base of the open triangle 31 will engage the slits 28 of the flap 27 and will make a withdrawal of the flap 27 impossible.
The flap 27 will then cover the other triangular elements 30 "and as its underside is gummed it may be attached or gummed to the rear face of the flap 14. When now in a similar manner the flaps 17 and 11 are folded along the lines 18 and 12 respec tively on the folded side flaps and the tab 25 is somewhat folded and passed through the open triangle 23 of the flap 11, it will cover with its mmed underside the rear side of the flap 11 and the triangles 22. The base of the open triangle 23 is engaged within the slits 26 so that a withdrawal of the flap 25 will be made impossible.
From the above it will be clear without 3 further explanation that an envelop has been produced which cannot be opened without the attempt to do so becoming known, as any attempt to withdraw the flaps 25 and 27 froni their engagements with the open triangles 23 and 31 respectively will result in the tear ing off of the remaining triangles 22 or 30 respectively and any contents which may have been inserted in the envelop will be securely contained therein, as the envelop cannot be opened without destroying the structure.
While I am aware of the fact that envelops have been heretofore made with slots in two of their flaps for the reception of extensions or wings of the opposite flaps, I consider it to be my invention to shape these flaps in a simplemanner by merely slitting the material and in such a way thatthe closing of the envelop may be readily perfected without the necessity of folding the wings or extensions.
In Figs. 4 to 7 a modified form of my invention is shown which differs from the form of envelop illustrated.
Flaps 33 and 34,-are shown provided with straight edges 35 and 36. The edge 35 is bent upon the inner face of the envelop blank as shown at 37 while the edge 36 is bent upon the outer face thereof as indicatedat 38, so that if the two side flaps are folded along the lines 39 and 40 upon the blank 41, the
flanges 37 and 38 will interengage as indicated at 42' in Fig. 6 whereupon the remainder of the blank 15 is folded and closed as. at 43 in the manner described with the form of blank illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3.
3 Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows i 1; In an envelop of "the character described, the combination with a single blank of paper having a body portion, of a top,
lower and side flaps, tabs on one of said side fiapsand the lower flap, the material of the top and'one of the side flaps being slitted along diagonal lines to form sets of 4 triangles each, one of said triangles of each set being open by removal of the material and adapted to allow the passing of the respective tab of the side and lower flaps, and slits separating the tabs from the body portion and adapted to be engaged by the bases of the open triangles, after the passage of p the tabs through said triangular openings.
a tab on the lower flap also partially separated therefrom by slits formed by slitting" the paper along the outer edges of said flap,
squares formed by 4 triangles out of theimaterial of one of said side flaps and the top flap near the outer edges thereof by diagonal slits, the paper of one triangle of each set of four being removed to allow the passage of the tabs on the other side and the lower flaps,
said tabs gummed on the inner faces to firmly engage the rear faces of'one of the side and the top flaps respectively above said sets of triangles substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have aflined 'my' signature.
