SHAVING-GAGE.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, GEORGE PosNIoK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaving-Gages, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in gage devices for accurately determining the cutting line on which the hair at the forward and upper edge of the ear may be trimmed. It is particularly designed for persons who are in the habit of shaving themselves; as oftentimes it is diflicult to accurately trim the hair at the same line on opposite sides of the head.

Broadly, the invention comprises a band of flexible material which is adapted tobe temporarily placed on the head and located or placed above and around the rear part of the ear at one end of the band; the other end of the band being provided with a gage. device which is placed against the opposite side of the head at the desired cutting line and in relation to the forward upper edge of the ear.

The invention is designed to be used with a safety or common razor, and in no way interf-eres with the usual use of the same.

Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 shows one form of the device as applied to the head and indicating that end to which the gage portion is attached.

Fig. 3 shows a slight modification which is designed to be attached to the ear and having a portion extending to the eye for the purpose of locating the cutting line with reference to the ear on one side of the head.

Tteferring to the drawings in detail: 1 and 2 designate strips of elastic material, as steel, similar to clock spring material, that are connected together in sliding relation by means of the bands 3 and 4. On one of the strips, as 2, is placed a scale indicated at 5 for the purpose of determining the relative adjustment of the strips, whereby after the strips are once adjusted it will not be necessary for the user to again readjust the device. Attached to the end of the strip 1 is an are shaped piece 6, preferably of wire, that freely slides through the loop 7. 8 is the gage member which is pivotally attached to the strip 2 by means of the pivot 9 which serves to connect the folded piece 10 which is bent so as to engage both of the inner and outer ends of the strip 2 and form the loop 11, and through which loop passes the wire 12 of the gage portion 8. The piece 10 is formed with a pointer part 18 which moves over a scale 14 for the purpose of angularly adjusting the gage 8 with reference to the band 2, for the purpose of determining the angle at which the hair will be trimmed. The gage portion proper, comprises oppositely extending arms 15, 16, 17, and 18, and the inwardly extending portions 19 and 20. The portions 15 and 20, and 17 and 19, rest against the side of the face in-' dicated by the line 20. The portions 18.

and 19, and 16 and 20, serve as guides for theback edge 21 of the razor, indicated at 22. The portion 12, it will be noticed, is an integral part of the other members of the gage, and passes through the loop 11 of the piece 10.

This device is used as follows: It is placed on the head, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, by placing the loop 6 so as to engage the upper rear edge part of the ear, as shown in Fig. 2. The strips 1 and 2 are then adjusted to bring the gage 8 at the desired line with reference to the forward part of the ear where the trimming is to be made, whereby when the blade 22 of the razor is placed against the outwardly extending portions 16 and 18, the line on which the hair is to be trimmed, or the shaving commences will be accurately determined, and also the desired angle is determined, by means of the scale 14. After one side of the head is trimmed, the device is removed and placed in reverse position on the other side of the head, when the same operation is carried out on that side.

In the modification shown in Fig. 3, in stead of the ear piece 6 shown in Fig. at being used, the loop construction shown in Fig. 6 may be used, which comprises the portions 23 and 2 1 which engage'the rear part of the ear. A loop 25 is provided for the purpose of permitting the piece to be bent to fit the ear by adjusting the distance between the upper and lower portions 23 and 24. It is understood that this ear piece is used in the same Way as indicated in Fig. 2.
