2o all whom 'it may concern 13e it known that l, SAMUEL MicknLsoN, a snbiect of the Emperor of Russia. residing at Washington, in the Dif `riet of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair-Cutting Gages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved gage to assist in the cutting of childrens hair, and it has for its prime object to produce a simple and inexpensive device to assist the mother, skilled in the art ot cutting hair, in cutting' the hair of children in a true and accurate manner and without danger' of disliguring by false movement of the shears.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and eiiicient gage which may be readily fitted to the heads of children of various sizes and which may be readily adjusted for long and short hair cuts.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and efficient gage device including' a `front gage bar which will be reversely supported, one edge of the same being straight and the other arcuate, thus enabling the bangs to be cut straight or in arcuate forni across the forehead.
A further object of the invention is to pro- .vide a device of the class described with ear guards, intended to be usedspeeially when short hair cuts are given for the purpose of protect-ing the ears of the child from contact with the shears.
A further object ot' the invention is to produce a gage device of the class described havin" a su )oi-ting member which ma be utilized for the purpose of supporting a top lock of the hair to separate it from that portion ot' the hair which is to be trimmed, thus preserving a lock ot' extra long hair for the purpose of ornanienting the same by tying a ribbon bow on said lock.

The body of the improved gage includes in its construction two bands or ribbons 15, 16, said bands being preferably formed of narrow; strips of resilient sheet metal, and each provided at its front end with an upwardly extending arm or vbracket 17. The bands 15, 1G are each provided at the rear end thereof with a sleeve 1S encircling the mating band and serving to establish a slidable connection therebetween. Each band is also provided with an upstruck tongue 19 frictionally engaging the mating band, and enabling the two bands to be frictionally retained in adjusted position without necessity of using' separate clamping or fas tening means, although it will be 'permissible to employ such separate fastening means within the scope of the invention.
Mounted slidably on each of the upwardly extending arms 17 is a friction clamp C,
each of said clamps comprising a fiat sleeve 20 engaging the arm or bracket 17 and having a fiat hook or keeperQl on its front side. The sleeve 2O is provided with a struckup friction tongue to frictionally engage the arm 17 on which it is mounted, and the hook 2l ofcach clamp is provided with a similar struckup tongue 23 to engage the end of a t'ront gage bar 91. Said front gage bar consists of a strip ot' sheet metal having a straight edge '25 and a curved or arcuate edge QG either of which may be placed uppermostforthe purpose of guiding the trimming of the bangs. The front gage bar is graduated in inches and tractions thereof in two directions from a centrally disposed zero mark, shown at 2T. The arms or brackets 17 are similarly graduated upwardly from their lower' extremities, and the bands. l5, 16 are also graduated, the graduations reading rearwardly from the ends thereof. I would have it understood, however, thatdill'erent systems of measurement may be employed and that the gradua- 1 tions may be arrangedto read in any pre- 1 fcrred manner, it 'being likewise understood that the dimensions'of the diderent parts may be varied to suit an requirements.
Ear flaps E are provi ed, each consisting of a suitably shaped shell 2B of sheet metal having a lining 29 of leather, textile or other suitable material. Each ear flap is, moreover, provided with a hook member 30, whereby it may be hung or supported on one of the bands or straps 15 or 1G, and such hook member being provided with a struckup friction tongue 31 to prevent its accidental displacement.
In cutting childrens hair it is frequently desired to leave a top lock or scalp lock of extra'length in order that a ribbon bow or similar ornament may be attached. For the purpose of holding the top lock in an outof-the-way position so as not to interfere with the use of the shears a holder is provided consisting of a bracket 32 formed of a piece of wire or other suitable material, said bracket being adjustably mounted at its lower end in keepers 33 struck up from one of the bands 15 or 16. The upper end of the bracket is formedwith an overhanging yoke 34 terminating in a hook 35 with which the top lock shown at 36 may be connected by fastening means such as a rubber band shown at B7. The top lock will thus be supported in an out-of-the-way position .and
will not interfere with the proper trimming of the back hair and the bangs. l
' From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawing hereto annexed, 40 the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood.
' The slidably connected bands 15 and 16 may be readily litted to heads reatly varying in size, and when said ban stare adjusted in position, the upwardly extending armsv or brackets 17 may be spaced any desired -distance apart which may be accurately gaged by placing in position the front bar 24:. The latter', owing to the presence of the indicating scale, may be accurately centered,
and by invertin said front bar a straight or an arcuate e ge may be presented asa trimming gage'. It will also be readily understood that a plurality of front bars may be supplied having trimming edges of varrious shapes. 'When 'a longhair cut is desired, the ear guards 2 8 may sometimes bel dispensed with," as'the ears will be protected by the bands 15, 16, but when a short hair cut is desired the ear guards will be found extremely useful in protecting the ears from Contact with the shears and avoiding the unpleasant tickling sensations and resultant nervousness caused thereby, as well as dan- 65 ger of actually injuring the ears with the shears. The ear flaps obviously may be adjusted to proper position lengthwise of the bands 15 and 16 and may be quickly applied or detached, as may be desired.
The improved device is extremely simple' in construction and operation, and it may be usefully employed not only by professional barbers but in the home as well, being particularly intended to assist persons not particularly skilled in hair trimming to perform this work in an acceptable manner and with very* slight difficulty.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is :W
1. vA device of the character described comprising a head engaging vresilient gage member including two arcuate bands each having one end slidably connected with the other member and each having 'an upwardly extending arm at its other end, in combination with supports slidably engaging the upwardly extending arms, and a flexible front bar supported by said supports.

A device. of the character described comprising a head engaging resilient gage member including two arcuate bands each having one end slidably connected with the other member and each having an'upwardly extending arm at its other end, in combination with a front bar supported for vertical movement on said upwardly extending arms.
3. In a device of the character described, a
head engaging member comprising two ably connected curved resilient bands, each having an upwardly extending arm, sleeves slidable on said arms, and a front bar supported adjustably by said sleeves. 4. In a device 'of the class-described, a head engaging member comprising two slidably connected curved resilient bands, each having an upwardly extending arm, sleeves' adjustable upon and frictionally engaging said arms, each sleeve being provided with a hook member, and a front bar supported adjustably on said hook members.
