Description

M. D. BRADY. PUSH R00.
APPLICATION FILED MAY14,I920.

INVENTQR I i v r4 BY push through the plug a citizen of the United States, residin eral improvement in the art.
,STEVINGS, OF INDIANA,
- PUSH-RUB.
neonate;
Application filed May 14,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MEREDITH D. BRADY, at Indiana in the county of Indiana and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Push-Rods, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the operating mechanism of internal combustion engines, particularly to valve operating means, and has for its object the provision of a novel push rod which is provided with screw adjusting means whereby the push rod may be adjusted for imparting to the associated valve the exact movement necessary to efiect proper action thereof.
An important object is the provision of a rod of this character provided with novel locking means for holding the screw in adjusted position so as to prevent dislocation and consequent derangement.
An additional object is the provision ofa device of this characterwhich will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efiicient in use, durable in service, and a gen With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter morefullydescribed and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Cgig'ure 1 is a. side elevation at my push r0 Fig. 2 is a plan view, and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 desi hates the body of the device which is cylin rical in shape and which has its lower end bifurcated, as shown atll, for the reception of a roller 12 journaled, as shown at 13. At its upper'end this body is internally threaded, as shown, and is provided with a closure plug or cap it threaded thereinto and having a flange 15 seating upon the open end. Disposed within the body 10 is a spring 16 which has one end secured to the plug or cap 14. Threaded or cap 14: is a screw 1? which is provided at its upper end with a head 18 adapted to engage the valve stem, not shown, with which the device is associated. At opposite sides this screw 1? is sociated therewith.

formed with grooves 19. The other end of thespring 16 is secured to the lower end of the screw 17. When the screw 17 is turned down the spring is naturally placed under tension tending to efl'ect unscrewing. iln order that the screw may be locked in adjusted positions, I provide a springpressed plunger 20 located in the plug 14 and having a small plate-like handle 21 as This plunger normally engages within either of the grooves 19 for preventing rotation of the screw.
In the use of the device it. will be seen that there is no departure from the use of an ordinary push rod except that means is provided for making adjustment so as to give to the valve the exact lift required. By adjusting the screw it will be seen that any play between the push rod and valve stem may be eliminated so as to avoid all lost motion and produce a more quietly running motor. When necessary to take up wear or play the operator grasps the little plate handle 21 and thereby retracts the plunger 20 out of engagement with the screw so that the spring will cause unscrewing of the screw 17 to bring the head 18 into engagement with the valve stem and this of course will efiect the desired adjustment. When the handle is released the plunger will engage within a groove.
While l have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it
1s of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope or the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, ll claim:
1. A push rod comprising a hollow cylindrical body carrying a roller at its lower end, a plug threaded within the upper end of the body and having a threaded hole, a coil spring within the body and with said plug whereby to hold the same against casual movement, and a screw threaded through said hole and having a head adapted to engage a valve stem to be operated, the other end of the spring being connected with said screw.
2. A device or the character described comprising a hollow cylindrical body, a plug connected closing the upper end of said body, a screw whereby to prevent rotation of said screw, threaded through said plug and extending and a spring within the body having one end co-axially of the body, a valve stem engagconnected with the plug and the other con- 10 ing head on said screw, said screw being nected with the screw whereby to be placed provided with longitudinal grooves, a under tension when the screw is turned in spring-pressed plunger slidable laterally of one direction.
