exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to engine valves and a special object of my improvements is to provide an improved valve and setting for an internal combustion engine. I secure this object in the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which, v

Fig. 2, is a detail elevation of the lower portion of Fig. 1 looking from the right of the latter figure. Fig. 3, is a detail perspective view of the lower end of the valve stem and the guide piece therefor. Fig. 4:, is an elevation of the thimble at the lower end of Fig. 1, the thimble being turned about 45 degrees around its axis from the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5, is a perspective view of one of the shims by which the distance between the valve a and the contact face of the thimble i may be adjusted. Fig. 6, is a perspective view of the ring and stop by which the shims are retained in their adj usted positions.

c is a guide piece bored centrally to form a way in which the valve stem 1) fits and reciprocates. The guide piece a is secured in a socket e 6 upon the engine as by a shoulder w and nut 12.
h is a sleeve fitting and adapted to reciprocate upon the cylindrical protruding lower end of the guide piece 0. The sleeve h is provided with an annular shoulder u toward its lower end and below this shoulder it is screw threaded on its exterior surface.
a is a thimble having a bottom j closing its lower nd and provided with internal screw threads at its upper end adapted to en age the screw threads upon the lower end 0 the sleeve h. The thimble a is screwed upon the sleeve 71., its upper edge contacting the shoulder a of said sleeve, as shown in Fig. 1.
7c is an opening through the vertical wall of the thimble i, and m is a second opening opposite the opening is formed by cutting away the vertical wall of the thimble between the bottom j and its upper edge, as shown most distinctly in Fig. 4.
n is a key, or cotter, provided with shoulders n adjacent to its ends, which ends protrude through the openings k and m. The key 71, passes through a slot in the lower end of the valve stem 2) in the usual way, and as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The lower end of the guide piece 0 is slotted, as shown at c and the key n fits and is adapted to reciprocate in said slot.
0 is a ring passing around the thimble i and resting upon the protruding ends of the key n.
1' indicates shims placed between the bot tom j of the thimble r and the lower end of the valve stem 6. In Fig. 6 a retaining piece for the shims 1' is shown in perspective. This consists of a ring 79 which passes around the thimble i and rests on the upper surface of the ring 0 and a guard or finger g which extends downward from the outer edge of the ring 29 into a position just outside of the outer ends of the shims r.
are lugs formed at the end of the finger g which extends past the sides of the shims 1* so as to prevent the finger from being moved out of its retaining position.
8 is a compression spring surrounding the sleeve 72, and pressing at its upper end against the nut o and at its lower end against the ring [9 and through that upon the ring 0 and key n thus the spring 8 acts to yieldingly press the valve a against its seat and return it to its seat when it has been forced therefrom.
is a cam shaft and g is a cam. The cam 9 18 adapted to act against the lower surface of the thimble z and through said thimble and the shims 1', if any, against the valve stem 6 to lift the valve a from its seat.
The position of the contact face of the thimble i'may be regulated by inserting a greater or less number of shims 1- between %)he valve stem 7) and bottom j of the thim- By this construction it will be observed that the action of the cam g is directly upon a piece separate from the valve and having its own guide and bearing surface and that the valve stem is guided independently oi! the part acted on by the cam, that the relative positions of the parts are easily adjusted and the construction is easily assembled and disassembled and parts liable to wear are easily and cheaply renewed, and that the construction occupies little space.
What I claimis:
1. The combination of a, valve having a valve stem, a guide piece for said valve tem having an aperture formed therethrough in which said valve stem engages so that the wall of said aperture forms a guide for said stem, a sleeve'upon said guide, piece secured to said stem so as to permit of relative lateral movement adapted to reciprocate. on said guide piece and be guided thereby, said sleeve extending in -front of the end of said stem so that it shall actuate said stem when said sleeve is reciprocated, and means for reciprocating said sleeve.
2. The combination of a valve having a valve stem, a guide piece for said valve stem having an aperture in which said stem engages so that the wall of said aperture forms a guide for said stem, a sleeve upon said guide piece secured to said stem so as to permit of relative lateral'movement adapted to reciprocate on and be guided by said guide piece and having lateral apertures in its wall, said sleeve extending in front of the end of said stem so that it shall actuate said stem when said formed there'through' I cured to said stem so as to permit of relative lateral movement adapted to reciprocate on and be guided by said guide piece and having lateral apertures in its Wall, said sleeve extending in front of the end of said stem and having a contact engagement therewith, saids'tem being provided with a part extending through said apertures, and a spring surrounding said reciprocating part and pressing against the part extending from the stem through said apertures, said reciprocating part being adapted to receive shims between the end of said and retain valve stem and said reciprocating part, and a retaining part interposed between said spring and the part extending from the stem and extending in front of the ends of said shims so as to prevent the removal thereofi. 3 1
