FOI-ETABLE DRAITING OUTFIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
" Patented Sept. 6, 1921.
Application led November 11, 1920. Serial No. 423,241.
To all who/m, 'it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, FRANK'C. VAN ETTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Drafting Outfits, of which the following is a specification. y
This invention has to do with improvements in portable drafting outts; and has reference to an outfitwhich is especially intended for the use of draftsmen and engi-l neers in the eld. The drafting outfit of the present invention is so arranged that the T- s uare may be folded up and when foldedy will be of the proper size and shape to con-VV veniently wrap into the foldable paper carrier and table.
One of the objects of the invention is to so Varrange the paper carrier that the paper will be very effectively protected against the elements, when the carrier is rolled up. Another obj ect of the invention is to provide an improved form of foldable T-square; and to so arrange and proportion the same with respect to the paper carrier that the folded T-square may be very conveniently transported with the paper carrier itself.
Other objects and uses of the invention will appear from a detailed description of the same which consists in the features `of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
1n the drawings:
Figure 1 shows a plan view of the paper carrier unfolded and with the T-square folded up and lying across the paper carrier;
Fig. 2 shows a view similar to that of Fig. 1 with the exception that a sheet of paper has been torn oif from the binding edge and set into place on the Celluloid strip7 and the 'l'- square has been unfolded and set into working position;
Fig. 3 shows a section taken on the line 8--3 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 4 shows a side view of the folded T-square; and
Fig. 5 shows a cross sectionof the paper carrier and T-square when the parts are rolled up and out of use. y
The paper carrier comprises a strip of leather 0r other suitable water proof material 6, the left hand edge 7 of which serves as the binding edge. To this left hand edge is secured a steel strip or bar 8 by means of a series of large head screws 9 which are preferably threaded up from beneath. A number 0f sheets of drafting paper 10 may have their left hand edges clamped between the strip 6 and the bar 8 as will be clearly evident particularly from Fig. 8.
Ordinarily a strip of Celluloid or other similar material 11 will be placed over the pile of drafting sheets 10 and will also have its left hand edge clamped by the bar 8. When it is desired to use the drafting outfit, the strip of Celluloid may be turned back, one of the sheets of paper may be torn off adjacent to the binding edge, the Celluloid strip may then be laid down smoothly and the strip of paper may then be set on top of the Celluloid and secured in place by the use of thumb tacks 12 as clearly shown in Fig. 2,
.F rom the foregoing it will be evident that the celluloid strip and the water proof strip 6 together serve asa weather proof protection for the intervening pile Vof drafting sheets; while at the same time the Celluloid strip andthe drafting sheets below it also serve as a convenient medium into which the thumb tacks may be forced in order to hold a drafting sheet in place while the outfit is being used in the field.
l have provided a T-scluare V 13 for use in conjunction with this outfit. The said T- square is of such proportion and construction that it may be folded up into a compact element of substantially the same length and f width as the binding bar 8,V so that it may be laid against said binding bar and rolled up with the same when the outfit is rolled ulp as shown in Fig. 5. This 'xl-square inc udes the central and outer members 14 and 15 respectively,V which' are hinged together at the point 16. An inner end member 17 is secured to the inner end of the section 14 but is offset as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Tf desired, the sections 14 and 17 may be formed integral with each other as shown in Fig. 4. The parts are so proportioned that when the upper end member 15 is folded up against the member 14 it comes flush with the shoulder 18 adjacent to the end member 17.
Beneath the end member 17 is pivoted the head 19. This head is of substantially the same width as the members 14, 15 and 17, and is pivoted in such a manner that when the head lies parallel to the body portion of the T-square it substantially occupies the space beneath the end member V17 and adj acent to the shoulder 21, the T-square having substantially the same length when'folded to turn the head 19 around tothe Vdesired v angle for service as shown in Figs. 2 and '3. At such time `there is left a suficient Clearance outside of the shoulder 2l to enable the T-square to be used with convenience.
While I have herein shown and described only a single embodiment of my present invention, still I do not limit :myself to the said embodiment except as I may do so in the claims. A
I Claim:
l. portable drafting outfit Comprising in Combination a paper carrier-includinga sheet of flexible waterproof backing material, a Clamping bar removably secured to one edge thereof and extending the full dimension of said edge,'a sheet :of Celluloid having one edge between said bar and the adjacent edge of the water proof backing. sheet, a plurality of draftingk sheets having their edges between the edge of the sheet ofy Celluloid and said edge .of the water :proof backing sheet, means for Clampinglthe ibar e and the water proof backing sheet together to thereby retain the edges offthesheet of CelH luloid and of the draftingsheets ini-position, anda foldable `T-square in conjunction with --said ayer .Carrier and com. risinffa Central PN i 1 bar, an end bar hinged .to .one end thereof,
