Specification of Letters Patent; Patented Aug, 23, 1921,
Application filed. June 26, 1920. Serial No. 392,139.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM'J. SoULLY, av
citizen of the United States of America, residing at Newport, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stenographers" Rapid Recorders, of which the following is a specification V The object of the invention is to provide a simple and 'eflicient means for facilitating the work of a stenographer especially in the taking of dictation and designed as a substitute for the note book ordinarily 1 employed in that connection, by affording means for supplying a continuous sheet or strip of note paper which may be fed continuously 9r asrequired by the operator to eliminate the interruptions incident to turning from page to page of the note-book or of changing from sheet to sheet of note paper, and also to facilitate the turning back of the notes to permit of review or for reference to a previously inscribed portion of the notes, and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of one end of the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken in the plane of one of the feed rolls on-the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the body of the table and the arm rest on the plane indicated by the line 4:- i of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the stand or rest whereby the table is supported.
The apparatus consists essentially of a stand or a support having the uprights or legs 10 and upper and lower longitudinal and transverse braces 12, of which the former are set down below the plane of the upper ends of the legs or standards to form cars 13 between which and bearing upon the upper braces is located a table 14 at opposite ends of which by means of upstanding brackets 15 are mounted spools or drums 16 having terminal heads 17, the body of each drum preferably being tubular as indicated for the reception of the shank 18 of a crank 19 whereby the drums may be turned to reel the continuous strip of paper shown at 20' from one to the other in either direction.
The brackets '15 are preferably provided with offsets 21 in which thelower portions of the heads or flanges 17 arehoused so as to leave theinner surfaces of said heads flush with the corresponding surfaces of the brackets to permit of free feeding movement of theweb of paper. Attached to the table and extending longitudinally between the drum supporting brackets are guide strips 22 by which the lateral edges of the strip or ribbon of paper are engaged'toprevent lateral movement of the strip, and-mounted upon these guide strips for sliding movement to suit the convenienceofthe stenographer is an arm rest 23 flanked at its side edges as shown at 24: and readily movable with the arm as necessary in the operation of taking notes upon the paper which may be fed in a step by step or continuous movement at the option of the operator by the manipulation of the crank arm located within convenient reach. Inasmuch as the said movement of the paper strip 0r ribbon is entirely under the control of the operator and may be effected for example with the left hand when the right hand is being used for taking the notes, the adjustment thereof can be effected without involving any interruption in the work of transcribing and the construction of the crank arms is such as to provide for their reversal in position to accommodate the operator if the notesare being taken with the left hand.
In the preferred embodiment of the construction, the side plates 15 are adapted to facilitate the dismounting of the drums for interchanging or renewing the paper reeled thereon, and to this end each of said plates hence cost, particularly withreference to the services of the stenographer.
What is claimed is:
1. A stenographic recording apparatus having a table provided at opposite ends with drums for carrying .a continuous strip or ribbon of intermediate portion of the strip or ribbon to preclude late :11 movement of the sameand consisting of guide flanges engaging the lateral edges of said strip or ribbon, and an arm rest consisting of a plate mounted to slide upon said guide strips and movable with the arm of the operator above the plane of the table supported strip or ribbon.
2. A stenographers recording apparatus having a table, brackets rising from the table at opposite ends thereof, drums mounted in bearings in said brackets and provided with terminal heads or disks, the brackets being offset for the reception of said heads or disks to dispose the inner surfaces of the latter flush with the correspondingsurfaces of the brackets, whereby a continuous strip or ribbon of paper may be carried on one drum and transferred to the other drum, guides for engaging the lateral edges of the strip in traveling from one drum to the other to prevent lateral movement of the strip, and an arm rest slidably mounted upon the table between the drums and above that portion of the strip disposed between the said guides.
paper, means for guiding the the other,
above the exposed. portion 3. A stenographers recording apparatus having a table, drums mounted on the table at its remote ends and adapted for transfer ofa continuous strip of paper from one to means for guiding the exposed portion of the strip or ribbon, means for rotating the drums, and an arm rest disposed of the ribbon and movable from one drum to the other.
4}. A stenographers"recording apparatus comprising spaced supply and collecting elements' for a continuous strip or ribbon of paper, and an arm rest for spanning the strip between said means and movable 1ongitudinally of the' strip.
5. A stenographers recording apparatus embodying spaced supply'and collecting elements for a continuous strip or ribbon of paper, guiding means forthe intermediate portion of the strip, and an arm rest traversing said guiding means for movement in the direction of the length of said strip.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
I WILLIAM J SCULLY.
