Application filed January 16, 1920. Seria1 1\To. 3 51,790
To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, FRED S. CARR, a c1t1- Newton, in the county of Middlesex, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Separable Fasteners, of which the following description, inconnection with the accompanying draw1ngs,- 1s a specification, like characters on the drawlngs representing like parts;-
This invention pertains to improvements in separable fasteners, and more particularly, though not exclusively, to an improvement in the securing of such fasteners to fabrics.
In the drawings, which show a preferred embodiment of one form of my invention:
Figure 1 is an elevation of two pleces of fabric held together by a preferred form of fastener;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line -22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2, the cloth carrying the socket belng omitted;
Fig. 4 is an elevation taken from the rlght of Fig. 2, showing the preferred form socket-securing means;
' Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the part shown in Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged section of the socket and socket-securing means as applied to the fabric being taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings and to the preferred form of my invention, I have shown a stud 7 which may be secured to the fabric in the manner shown and claimed in my copending application Serial No. 351,7 8p, filed herewith. The socket 8 may contain any suitable form of spring means, but I prefer to utilize the spring 9 cooperating with a notched aperture 10, as shown in'my pending'application Serial No. 307,111, filed June Only a small portion of-the socket mm 11 is utilized to hold in position the spring 9,
and I prefer to utilize other portions of said socket rim cooperating with clenching elements, hereinafter more fully described, to

"The prongs '13 may conveniently' 'be struck down from-the metal forming the 9 P 5, 'asis best shown in 1 s previously stated, the aperture 10 the socket-casing"is preferably notched to provide a lateral look, as in my copending application above referred to. I may ,conveniently utilize this notch as a means for locating the socket casing relative to the applying tool, and I preferably utilize the applying tool to locate the socket-securing part 15 by providing a non-symmetrical aperture 16 in that part. Claims: 7 1; A metallic-secured socket for separable fasteners comprising,'in combination, a cas which is best defined. in the following ing providing "a plate having a stud-receiva ing aperture therethrough and an upwardly and inwardly flanged peripheral rim, a casing-securing part on the opposite side of the socket-carrying fabric from sald casing and providing fabric-penetrating prongs, and :1
anvil portions ,on said casing toturn said prongs outwardly beneath said inwardly I I Y flanged peripheral rim when said casing and securing partare pressed toward one an- 2. metallic-secured socket, for'separable fasteners 'COIIIPHSHIg, 1n comb natlon', a casmg provldmg a plate having a stud-receiving aperture therethrough and an upwardly and inwardly flanged peripheral rim, a casing-securing part on the opposite side of the socket-carrying fabric from said casing and providing fabric-penetrating prongs, and anvil portions on said casing to turn said prongs outwardly beneath said inwardly flanged peripheral rim when said casing and securing part are pressed toward one another with the fabric between them, said casing containing a spring retained therein by saidv inwardly flanged peripheral rim and said anvil portions arranged in non-interfering relation to said spring.
3. A metallic-secured socket for separable fasteners comprising, in combination, a casing providing a plate having a stud-receiving aperture threrethrough and an upwardly and inwardly flanged peripheral rim, a casing-securing part on the opposite side of the socket-carrying fabric from said casing and providing fabric-penetrating prongs, and
anvil portions on said casing to turn said prongs outwardly beneath said inwardly flanged peripheral rim when said casing and securing part are pressed toward one another with the fabric between them, said casing containing a spring retained therein by said inwardly flanged rim and said casing and casing-securing part each provided with locating means to preclude assembly of said casing and casing-securing part with said prongs in interfering relation to said spring.
4:. A socket for separable fasteners eomprisin in combination, a spring-containing casing, having a flanged-over rim, a socketsecuring part having prongs projecting therefrom for engagement beneath the rim of said casing, said socket-securing part being dished to throw the socketcarrying it'abric toward the face of the socket.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
