Be it known that I, FRED S. CARR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newton, in the county of MiddleseX, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Fasteners, of which'the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specifica tion, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention pertains to improvements in separable fasteners, and more particularly, though not exclusively .to dress fasteners of the type adapted to be sewedto the fabric.
It is among the objects of my invention to provide a fastener in which a stud and socket may either be adapted to be locked against separation underlateral strain, for use on heavy fabrics or which, optionally, may be adapted not to lock under lateral strain, for use on'lightfabrics.
The disclosure of the present application resembles closely that shown in my compending application, Serial No, 351,776, filed herewith, differing therefrom in that the socket is reversible, the socket when applied with the disk portion thereof away from the fabric providing for a lock under lateral strain, and when applied with the flanged side of the socket away fromthe fabric, providing a fastener not locked against separation by a resolution of forces arising from lateral strain between stud and socket.

will not be effective asa lock and, if substantial strain is exerted between stud and socket in a lateral direction, the stud nd socket'will separate. I
It will be understood that while for most fabrics it is highly desirable to provide a lock against lateral strain, it may in some instances, for light fabrics or laces, be desirable to provide for separation of stud and socket by a strain somewhat less. than that which might tear the fabric.
While I have shown and described a preferred form of one embodiment of my in vention, it will be understood. that changes may be made, including. omission, substitution, alteration and reversalof parts, or even changes in the mode ofoperation, with-; out departing from the scope of my invention, which is best defined in the following claims.

3. A separable fastener comprising, in
combination, a stud and socket including a plate having flan 'ed marginal portions, a spring retained in said socket beneath said flanged marginal portions, an aperture in said plate providing notches, said stud and socket being proportioned to permit engagement of said stud with said spring from either side of said socket.
4. A separable fastener comprising, in combination, a stud and socket including a plate having flanged marginal portions, a spring retained in said socket beneath said flanged marginal portions, and an aperture in said plate providing notches, said stud and socket being proportioned to permit ongagement of said stud with said spring from either side of saidsocket, and said spring providing opposed stud-engaging portions extending diagonally of the notched aperture in said plate.

A separable fastener comprising, in combination, a. stud having a head and a neck cooperating with a socket having a plate containing a spring, said plate providing at one side of the socket a relatively small aperture through which the head of the stud may be passed and providing as a part of said aperture a narrowed portion, the walls of which oppose separation of stud and socket by strain exerted at any angle resultant from lateral strain between said stud and socket in a direction toward said narrowed portion, while permitting ready separation of stud and socket by force exerted at an angle greater than that which is likely to result from lateral strain, the opposite side of said socket and the cooperating portions'of said stud being adapted to permit engagement of stud and socket while said narrowed portion is rendered ineffectiveto oppose separation under lateral strain, thereby to provide at the option of the user a fastener providing either a very great or a comparatively small resistance toseparation by forces resultant from lateral strain.
