Description

UNITED,
sTArss' Fries.
r'rsr IPADLOCK.
Application filed November 18, 1920. Serial No. 424,822.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SEGAL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New'York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pad locks, of which the following is aspecification. 7 1
My invention relates to padlocks and more particularly to pin tumbler padlocks.
The rincipal objectof the invention is the production of a padlock of extreme simplicity of construction, of strength and rigidity and which shall contain a minimum number of parts, thereby making for economy and for ease of manufacture and assembly.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description the invention consisting in the novel parts and combinations of parts hereinafterv more particularly described and then specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating a practical embodiment of the inven tion:
Figure 1 is a vertical section (partly in elevation) taken through my improved pad lock. 1
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectlon on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the several figures of the drawing:
1 indicates the hollow body or casing of I the padlock provided with bores or openings in the upperwall 1 thereof receiving the long and short legs 2 and 3 respectively of the shackle 4 as in the ordinary construction of padlock. Said long leg 2 is provided with a flanged or beaded end 5 to prevent complete withdrawal of the shackle from the'body and both legs are provided with slots 6 adapted to receive locking dogs to be presently described whereby any withdrawal of the shackle from thebody is prevented.
7 indicates a pin tumbler barrel provided with the usual rectangular shaped extension 7 integral therewith and constituting the housing for the pin tumbler (not shown). 8 is a face plate or escutcheon' preferably integral with said barrel 7 and which fits within the end of the body of the padlock and engages a shoulder 9 thereon. Said Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 9,1921.
face plate is non-removably fastened or secured in this position when the parts within the padlock are properly assembled. The barrel 7 receives an ordinary conventional key-plug or cylinder (notshown).' which is rotatable, one end of-which is received by a suitable annular opening in the face plate 8 and the other or inner end of which is provided with a plate '10 engaging the end of the barrel 7 whereby a forward withdrawal of the cylinder through the barrel is prevented. Preferably integral with said plate 10 is a finger 11 bent or turned downwardly and adapted to engage the side ofthe extension or pin tumbler housing7 and obviously acting as a stop to limit the movement of rotation of the cylinder within'the barrel 7. Connected to the key-plug Within the barrel 7 and projecting upwardly therefrom is the stem 12.
13 indicates a rotatable post, preferably hexagonal-shaped or of ashape other than round, provided with a flanged end 14 bearferably integral with said upper wall and which acts as a pivot on which said post is rotated. 17 arelOcking dogs or plates having hexagonal-shaped central openings of a sizepermitting them to receive said post whereby independent rotation of said locking dogs or post with respect'to each other is prevented. f The upper of'said locking dogs 17 engages a shoulder 18 on said post 13 and a washer 19 carried by said post Y is interposed between as shown in Fig. 1. p
A compression spring 20 which encircles said post 13 engages the lower of said locking dogs 17 as well as the plate 10; The function of said spring is not only to retain the flanged end 14 of the post in engagement with the inner surface of the upper wall 1 of the padlock whereby the lug 16 will at alltimes enter the opening 15 but it acts to retain the locking dogs in the proper vertical position on'said post and in alinement with the slots 6 in the legs of the shackle. The end of the post 13 is provided with a slot 21 receiving the stem 12 of the cylinder within the barrel 7.
The padlock may be operated by a suitable key 22 adapted to enter a slot in the key-plug within the barrel 7 to rotate the same in'the usual manner in cylinder or pin said locking dogs tumbler locks, the operation of which is old in the art and well understood. The rotation of said keyplug, inasmuch as connection between the post 18 and key-plug is made by the stem 12 and slot 21, rotates the post, as is manifest, to cause the locking dogs 17 to enter the slots 6 in the legs of the shackle or be withdrawn therefrom so that said shackle may be locked to the body of the padlock or unlocked as desired.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a padlock, a hollow body, a shackle, a rotatable post within said body and a locking dog rotatable with and carr d by said post and slidable vertically thereon and adapted to interlock with said shackle.
2. In a padlock, a hollow body, a shackle, a rotatable post within said body carrying locking means adapted to interlock with said shackle, a barrel within said body, a keyplug carried thereby, a plate fastened to one end of said key-plug and adapted to engage the end of said barrel and a finger on said plate adapted to engage the side of said barrel to limit the movement of rotation of said post.
3. In a padlock, a hollow body, a shackle, a rotatable post within said body, locking means carried by said post adapted to interlock with said shackle and a spring engaging said locking means for maintaining the same in proper vertical position on said post.
4. In a padlock, a hollow body, a shackle, a rotatable post within said body provided with a slot, a key-plug supported within said body, a stem connected to said key-plug and entering the slot in said post, locking means carried by said post adapted to interlock with said shackle and a spring engaging said key-plug and said locking means for maintaining said locking means in proper position. 7
5. In a padlock, a hollow body,-a lug on said body, a shackle, a rotatable post within said body provided with a slotand with an opening receiving said lug, a key-plug supported within said body, a stem connected slidably mounted on said post and engaging the sheulder thereon and rotatable therewith and adapted to interlock with said shackle and a spring encircling said post and engaging said key-plug and said locking dog. v
, 7. in a padlock, a hollow body, a lug on said body, a shackle, a rotatable post within said body provided with a slot and an opening receiving said lug, a barrel fastened to said body, a rotatable key-plug within said barrel, a stem connected to said key-plug and entering said slot in said post, a locking dog carried by said post adapted tointerlock with said shackle, a spring engaging said key-plug and said locking dog and a finger connected to said keyplugand adapted to engage said barrel to liniitthe inovement'ot rotation of said post.
8. In a padlock, a hollow-body, a lug on said body, a shackle, a rotatable post within said body provided with a slot and with an opening receiving said lug, a key-plug supported within said body, a stem connected to said key plug and entering said slot in said post and a locking dog carried by said post adapted to interlock with said shackle.
Signed at New York in the county of New York and State of New-York thisl'Tth day of Novemben A. D. 1920. a
