yone of the objects of the invention consists in the provision of a device of the above character wherein a tenen of a table leg is so driven and wedged during the action of clamping it that the table leg is practically unmovably secured in operative position.
A further object of the invention consists in the provision of a device for securing table legs to tables which is composed of a single` piece of material stamped from a metal sheet, possessing resilient and yieldable properties, and having ears, which are formed integral by cutting and bending them from the body of the device or either cutting them from the stock from which the device is cut or stamped, for securing the device to the table top.
VV-e accomplish the above objects of the invention, and such others as may appear from a perusal of the following description and claim, by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved device for attaching table legs to tables. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view showing a table leg attached to a table top, by means of our invention. Fig. 4 is a top or plan view of a modified form of our table leg attaching device. F ig. 5 is'a front elevation of the construction shown in Fie. 4.
Tteferring to the drawings, the device for attaching table legs to tables comprises a thin resilient metal unit member which is stamped at one operation from the metal stock. This unit member may be bent into a rectangular form as shown in Fig. 1, in order that it may be attached to the side wall of a depending tie-rail of a round table top (Fig. 3) or the sheet may be bent angularly, so as to fit a corner formed at a point of meeting of two tie-rails arranged at right angles to each other.
v Examining Figs. 1 and 2, the sheet metal unit member is bent to provide a/rear wall 10, side walls 11, and front walls 12, the latter being bent and terminating in outwardly disposed parallel flanges 13. These flanges are spaced a distance apart to provide a sufficient range of movement to enable side walls 11 to be impinged against the sides of a tenen of a table leg, this clamping action being secured by means of clamping bolts 14, which pass through suitable alined apertures in the flanges 13. By means of the heretofore described construction the tenons of the legs are not only detachably secured in position, but considerable variation in the diametrical dimensions of the tenons can be overcome without changing the size of the le attaching device, which is of considerab e importance from a manufacturing standpoint.
The leg attachingdevice is secured to the table top 15 and the depending tie-rail, or tie-rails, 16 by means of suitable ears 17 and 18 which are provided with apertures for the passage of holding screws. The ears 17 are formed integrally with sid-e walls 11, one of the ears being arrangedv along the upper edge of each wall and near rear wall 10 and each of said ears is provided with an aperture for a holding screw by which the device is secured tothe underside of the table top 15. YThe ears 17 are cut from the stock at the time'the leg attaching device is formed. The lower end of the device is Secured to the depending tie-rail, or tie-rails, 16 by suitable ears 18 which are cut and bent out of the side walls 11, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The ears 18 are each provided with an aperture through which a holding screw is passed. After the device is securely attached to the table top 15 and the depending tie rail 16, by means of the ears 17 and 18, and before the clamping bolts 14 are set up, the tenen 20 of the table leg 21 is inserted from the bottom into the hollow inclosure formed by the walls 10, 11 and 12 of the device, after which the clamping bolts 14 are set up to tightly impinge the side walls 11 against the sides of the tenen 20. After the table leg has been properly clamp-ed in operative position the inner end of the device is securely attached to the underside of the table top 15 by means of suitable ears 25 which are formed integrally with flanges 13. The ears 25 are provided with elongated apertures 26through which the screws 27 pass,

Figs. t and 5 illustrate a modified form of o ur table leg attaching device.v In this construction the sheet metal-unit is bent intermediate .its length so as toiprovide an angle having two equal sides 11a the surface planes of which are arranged at right angles to each other so Vas to fit intoY a corner of the table structure. In Figs. 4L and 5 `the freeend portions of the unit member are bent toward each other to form thev walls 12L which terminate in outwardly disposed spaced flanges 13a.
