Be it known that I, EDWARD J; CooK, acitizen of the United States, residing at Brainerd,,in the county of Crow Wing and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Merry-Go-Rounds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to amusement devices, particularly to toy merry-go-rounds,

and has for its object the provislon of a toy merry-go-round including a relatively stationary frame and a rotatable member mounted therein and adapted to be twirled by the engagement of the operators fingers upon the spindle, the rotatable member including a platform upon which are mounted the animals or other figures.

An important object is the provision of a device-of this character which is so constructed that it may be packed and shipped in knocked down condition so as to occupy but little space and which is yet capable of being set up so readily that a child may perform the necessary operations.

Another object is the provision of a devlce of this character in which the platform carries novel means whereby the animals or other figures may be detachably mounted so that their arrangement may be changed or so that different sets of figures may be interchangeably mounted upon the platform.

An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be very simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efficient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.

With the above and other objects and advantages in View, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates broadly the stationary frame which includes upright sides 11, a top cross piece 12, and a bottom cross piece 13. These cross pieces are designed to be secured together by any suitable means and to remain together. Pivoted upon the underside of the bottom cross member .13 are strips 14.- which may be swung to extend laterally beyond the cross piece and serve as supporting feet or which may be swung to lie within the confines of the cross piece when the device is packed for shipment. Centrally of its top the cross piece 13 is formed with a recess 15 and the top cross piece 12 is formed centrally with a hole 16.

The rotatable portion of the device comprises a center pole 17 which may be formed as a tube and which is formed adjacent its upper end with a plurality of upstruck lugs 18. Fitting upon the top of the pole 17 and resting upon these lugs 18 is a conical cover plate 19 of suitable sheet material and which preferably has a depending scalloped edge 20. At its lower end the pole 17 carries a pin 21 which fits within and is rotatable within the recess 15. Fitting within the hole in the top of the pole is a spindle 22 which passes rotatably through the hole 16 and which carries a flag staff 23.

Disposed upon the lower end of the pole 17 is a circular disk 24 constituting the plat form of the device and formed of suitable sheet material, preferably tin, and this disk has a depending scalloped edge 25. The disk 24 is supported by means of a plurality of screws or the like 26 which are secured to the pole 17 beneath the platform and upon which the platform rests.

The numeral 27 designates the animals or other figures carried by the platform and these may be, if desired, the well known lead soldiers or the like or may be formed as the representation of any other objects and each figure 27 is provided with an elongated base 28. In order that these figures may be held upon the platform, I provide the platform at equally spaced points with a double series of upstruck lugs 29 which are resilient and which are formed as clips within which the bases 28 of the figures may be engaged.

When thedevice is packed for shipment the parts are all disassembled so-as to occupy but little space and the assembly is so simple that it may be performed by a child. In assembling the device the supporting feet 14 on the'stationary frame areswung into laterally extending position, the roof member 19 is disposed upon the pole 17 in engagement with the lugs 18, the platform 24: is slid onto the pole, the platform is engaged upon the screws 26, and the pole assembly is thenplaced within the frame 10 with the pin 21 engaging within the recess "15, after which the spindle 22 is inserted through the hole 16 and into theupper' end of the pole. The figures 27 are then mounted upon the platform24 by engaging their bases 28 within theclips 29. The device is operated by grasping the upper end of the pole and twirling it between the thumb and forefinger. Owing to the mall bearing surshown at 17*, to define a shoulder 17 upon which the cover may engage. This modified construction is shown in Fig. 9.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiments of myinvention, it is. of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.

Having thus described my invention, I claim: I

A toy merry go round comprising a rectangular supporting frame including upper and lower cross bars and vertical side bars, supporting feet p-ivotally connected with the bottom cross bar and disposable selectively to lie therealong or in a position extending at right angles thereto, a standard removably journaled within said frame, a platform detachably engaged upon said standard and carrying figures, and a roof member detachably engaged upon the upper portion of the standard, all of said elements being removable and detachable whereby the entire device may be knocked down tov occupy but little space.
