HATPIN.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2, 1921.
Application filed September 18, 1920. Serial No. 411,057.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TVILLIAM H. FunnnRroK, a citizen of the United States residing at Earleigh Heights, in the count of Anne Arundel and State of Maryland, liave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hatpins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hatpin and has for its principal object the production of simple and eflicient device of this nature which may be used without marring the hat or endangering the wearer or others.
A further object of the invention is to generally improve upon hatpins of this character by providing a device which will be of extremely simple durable and. inexpensive construction, one which is efficient and reliable in operation, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the'device showing the locking member in section,
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the locking member,
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the locking member,
Fig. at is an enlarged front elevation of the central portion of the locking member showing the outer portions broken away.
Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the locking member showing the central portion thereof, the outer portions being broken away, and
Fig. 6 is a centrally located fragmentary section through the locking member.
Referring to the drawings by numerals it will be seen that 1 designates the hat pin having the usual knob handle 2 upon one end and this handle 2 may be of any pre ferred construction. The other end of the hatpin 1 is formed so as to provide a ball 8 being somewhat pointed and a groove 1 is situated between the ball 3 and the remaining portions of the hatpin 1.
The locking member 5 consists of the concavo-convex disk 6 having a centrally located aperture 7 therein and a flange extending from the outer portion thereof as indicated by the numeral 8. This flange 8 may be either square as shown or round or of any other ornamental shape that may be desired. This flange 8 is also provided with a plurality of apertures 9 so that same may be securely sewed to the hat. It should be understood that in the practical use of a device of this nature each hat should be provided with a locking member 5 or if so desired means may be provided upon the flange 8 for releasably attaching the locking member 5 to the hat.
Upon the convex or other face of the locking member 5 there are situated the rivets 10 in spaced relation to each other so as to be upon diagrammatically opposite points from the aperture 7 and spring wires 11 connect these rivets 10 as is clearly shown in Fig. 3 so as to be normally spaced from each other and so that the space therebetween will register with the aperture 7.
Thus it will be readily understood that the pin 2 may be manipulated so that the ball 3 may penetrate through the aperture 7 and through the space between the wires 11 thus forcing them apart and finally engaging the groove 4 thus holding the pin 1 in a locked position. By a smallefl'ort the pin 1 may readily be released from the locking member 5 by simply pulling same but will efficiently prevent the disengagement of the two parts accidentally. At the same time it will be readily seen that the ball member 3 is shaped so as to not injure the scalp should same be scraped across the head of the wearer and this ball will not extend far enough from the convex face of the disk 6 as to endanger others as is the case with the ordinary hatpin.
The above description taken in connection with the drawings illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention and it will be readily understood that numerous changes in proportion, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to without departing from the scope of my invention and I therefore do not wish to limit myself except as set forth in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is In a device of the class described including a hatpin having a ball formed on one end,'a locking member comprising a concavoconvex disk having a centrally located aperture, a flange extending from said disk and adapted to be attached to a hat, spaced apart wires extending across said aperture and having their ends fixed to the convex face of the disk.
In testimon whereof I affix my signature.
W LLIAM H. FREDERICK.
