Description
W. SMITH.
CLOSURE LIFTER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 21. 1920.
Patented Aug. 2, 1921.
//.9 tie lm/enzor l a/ I a n 4 lc'frz eases UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CLOSURE-LIFTER.
Application filed June 21,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closure-Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in closure lifters, especially adapted for removing the usual card board closures of milk bottles, the object of the invention being to provide an improved construction of this character, which is efficient in use and capable of economical manufacture.
Other object will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1, is a top plan view of a device embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 a side view of the same Fig. 3, another side view taken at substantially right angles to Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4, a view showing the lifter in position of use.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a metallic disk 5 having a lip or lug 6 struck from and extending upwardly from substantially the central portion of said disk. The lip 6 is provided with a perforation 7 for the attachment of a cord, or the like 8 for convenience in use of the same.
The disk 5 is also provided with a central penetrating point or tang 9 struck downwardly from the central portion of said disk, and situated at substantially the center of said disk. Cork screw points 10 are also struck downwardly from opposite sides of said disk, said points being pointed and positioned at diametrically opposite points, and being oppositely curved or inclined, as indicated in Fig. 3, to constitute cork screw points. The central point 9 is materially longer than the points 10 as shown.
In use, the device is applied to the ordinary card board closing plate or disk 11 of an ordinary milk bottle 12 by placing the point 9 at substantially the center thereof Specification of Letters Ifatent.

and pressing downwardly until said point penetrates the closure 11. Thereupon, the cork screw points 10 come into operative contact with said closure 11, and are engaged therewith by pressing downwardly on the disk 5, and at the same time turning or twisting the same slightly, said points operating as cork screw points to penetrate and engage the closure 11. The closure 11 is then removed by exerting rotating pressure upon the handle 6 and at the same time pulling upwardly thereon. In this way, the closures of ordinary milk or cream bottles may be quickly and readily removed when desired. The device disclosed is a simple and eflicient one for the purpose, and capable of economical manufacture by being stamped from a solid disk of metal.
The projections 9 and 10 are preferably rounded and conically shaped, particularly the central projection 9 so as to facilitate turning of the disk 5 relatively to the closure 11 without turning the latter in the bottle mouth.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims. 7
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A device of the class described, comprising a plate having a lip struck upwardly therefrom to constitute a handle; penetrating points inclined in opposite directions struck downwardly from the sides of said plate; and a penetrating central point struck downwardly from said plate and perpendicular thereto and longer than the said inclined points, adapted to penetrate and anchor the device in position to engage said inclined points, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described comprising a plate having a lip struck upwardly therefrom to constitute a handle and a penetrating central point struck downwardly therefrom and perpendicular thereto; and
penetrating points inclined in opposite di- In testimony whereof I have signed iny rections struck downwardly from the sides name to this specificationin the presence of of said plate, said central point being longer two subscribing witnesses. V

point and inclined points being diametrilvitnessest cally disposed on said plate, substantially as JosHUA R. H. Porm's, described. B. G. RICHARDS.
