To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT J. MALONEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Extractors for Closures for Bottles, &c., and Stoppers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention resides in an improved device which has the capability of employment for piercing through a paper cap such as commonly used for closing the mouth of' a milk bottle, and for acquiring an engagement against the under side of the cap whereby the latter may be easily extracted from the mouth of the bottle, and also which has the capability of employment for serving as a stopper for the mouth of the milk bottle after the cap has been removed.

The invention is described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and is set forth in the claim.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view showing the improved device in full lines and indicated by dotted lines the mouth portion of a milk bottle having a usual form of closing cap therein, and showing the manner of using the improved device for the extraction of the cap.

Fig. 2 is a view of the device as seen at right angles to Fig. 1, the stopper portion thereof being shown in section; and this view indicates the utilization of the device as a stopper for the bottle after the removal of the mouth closing cap.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the combined cap extractor and stopper.

Fig. 4 is a view of a modification to be hereinafter referred to.

As my invention has been carried out in the specific formation of the device, the latter comprises a metal disk-shaped body 10, having an integrally formed upwardly extended handle member 12, and an integrally formed downwardly extended pointed piercing member 13 which is provided with ratchet shaped barb forming notches 16; and the device, moreover, comprises a' tapered cork 14 centrally through and beyond which the notched piercing member is passed, such cork having its top next to, and secured to, the under side of the disk shaped body IO- the connection oi Specification of Letters Patent.

such cork and the disk shaped portion :being by a cement or proper adhesive material, and which is represented in the drawings by the numeral 15.

As manifest from the drawings, the paper cap closed in the mouth portion of a milk bottle and ordinarily difficult of extraction may be readily pierced and engaged by the projection or tang 13, and then by the handle pulled out or withdrawn from the bottle mouth.

The paper cap may be stripped oil from the piercing projection, and the devicemay then have a portion thereof comprising the tapered cork forced into the neck of the bottle, as indicated in Fig. 2, to serve as a closure for the bottle, to be readily removed and replaced from time to time as desirable or convenient, while a portion of the original contents of the bottle is left therein.

Of course, instead of having the stopper portion 14- composed of cork, such portion may be of rubber or other material having a greater or less degree of compressibility and suitable for stoppering purposes.

Aside from the value of the device for its great utility for convenient use, it is of very simple and inexpensive construction and is to all intents and purposes sufliciently sanitary.

As shown in Fig. 4, the tang or shank comprising the notched piercing portion 13 may have a shoulder 17 at its portion which when combined with the cork has its position of engagement with or against the under side of the latter. This shoulder 17 is slightly diametrically greater than the general diameter of the piercing portion and is downwardly divergent; and it serves to retain the metallic portion at all times with its parts in proper relation to the stopper.

In manufacture where the stopper is composed of cork, the latter may have a comparatively small hole bored therethrough, and when soaked in boiling water or steamed the shouldered tank portion may be readily forced through the hole; the cork upon drying will tightly hug the shank for its permanent retention thereon. The natural resiliency of a rubber stopper will insure ease of engagement and certainty of the retention.
