Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OE IcE.
JAMEs H. BATCHELDER AND sEwEL J. SARGENT, OF LINCOLN, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,603, dated May 6,1873; application filed March 22, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J. H. BATGHELDER and S. J. SARGENT, both of Lincoln, in the county of Addison and State of Vermont, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Wash-Boilers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, referencebeing had to the annexed drawin g making a part of this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a sectional view of our steam-washer. Fi g. 2 is a bottom view of the same.
This invention has relation to current-washers for clothes-boilers; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the partition-flanges under the base, a series of currentpassages being. thus formed leading to each spout independently. nection therewith, of the transverse perforated arch or guard arranged intermediate] y between the spouts, and covering the lateral openings through which the water, descend in g from the clothes, passes into the first branch of each series of currentpassages below the base-plate. The object of this invention is to increase the suction and to equalize and intensify the action of the spouts.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A designates the boiler. B represents the base plate of the washer, of such size that it will fit the interior of the boiler neatly. Around the edge of the base-plate, and below the same, is secured the circumscribing-flange a. Near each end openings b are made for communication with the spouts O G, which are erected from the upper surface of the base-plate. Below the base-plate an oblique partition, 0, extends diametrically across the same, and is connected with the circumscribing-flange a at each end, thus entirely dividing the space below the base-plate into two equal portions, communicating independently each with a sep- It also consists, in conarate spout. On each side of and parallel with the partition 0 extend partial partitions or flanges d, which are attached to the circumscribing-flange alternately at alternate ends, thus forming on each side a long continuous Zigzag passage, 0, which serves to reheat the water in its passage, afterbeing partially cooled by the clothes, back to the spout, reaching the lattenin a boiling condition, which causes it to be ejected forcibly upon the clothes. Trans versely across the central portion of the base plate, and above the same, is arranged the arched guard-plate D, through which perforations are made for the passage of the water from the goods, which is then conducted, by the transverse passage h below the guardplate, to the outer edges of the base-plate, where it passes downward through the lateral openings or into the first or initial branch of each series of zigzag passages below the baseplate.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of the central oblique partition 0, extending entirely across the length of the base, and the oblique partitions (I, attached to the circumscribingflange a at alternate ends, forming on each side of the central partition a continuous zigzag passage, e, leading independently to each spout, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the spouts O and transverse passage it above the base-plate B, of the separate passages 6 below the base plate, leading, respectively and independently, to said spouts, substantially as specified.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES HENRY BATUHELDER. SEWEL JOHN SARGENT.
