RAIL CONSTRUCTION FOR ROLLING HOPIEBS. p

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented .miv is, i921.
`Application led July 28, 1820. Serial No. 3912520,
looll whom it may concern:
Be it knovnfthet l ALBERT P. LEE, a citi/en of the United States, residing1 at Chicago, in' the county of Cook and State of, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Rail Construction for Rolling'lloppers, of which the followingl is a full,4 'lear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accomforming a. part of this specification.
` This invention relates to rolling hoppers and more particularly to the construction of th i rails upon which the hoppers are adapted to roll. 4
In providing` a. dumping' hopper for vehicles in which the hopper is adapted to roll automatically from a load carrying position to a dumping position and to complete the dum-ping;A action `by a pivotal movement about a'point at or near the end of the rail,` it hasbeen found that some means must be provided to prevent the hopper from becoming disengaged at its pivots, while the pivotal movement is going on. It is a purpose of this invention to provide a rail of the above character with means to effectively prevent the disengagement of the hopper from its pivots.
More particularly it is the purpose of this invention to provide a rail having portions extending downwardly from the center thereof, and provided with pivot means at the ends thereof, with means to prevent the disengagement of the hopper from said pivot means while the hopper is pivoting thereon.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a vehicle carrying a hopper having pivot pins thereon, with rails upon which said hopper may roll, having' socket members at its ends in which said hopper may pivot on said pins that are provide-.d with guards to prevent the pins from leavlng the sockets while the hopper is in such position that it is supported entirely by said pins and sockets, and thus prevent the hopper from tilting olf the ends of the rails to the ground. Y
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description of the accompanying drawings proceeds, in which like characters of reference are used to designate like parts, and in which Figure is an end view of a rolling hop- Pel, Shen/.111s .011.6 ,Of the rails associated therewith inside elevation, i `l Fig. 2 is a. topV plan view of one of the rail ends. Referring in detail to the` drawings, the inventiony comprises the hopper 3 having the bearingrail 4 thereon with a curved portion l5 adapted to, cooperate with the rail '6 mounted on the vehicle framework 7 in any suitable manner. The hopper 3 is provided with pivot pins 8 where the curved portions 5 of the bearing rail meet the straight portions thereof-` i In F ig. 1 the hopper` 3 isk shown in its central load carrying` position and thisihopper is held in this position by suitable retaining devices (not shown), and when these are. released it is adapted ,to roll automatically from the centra-l portion 9 of the rail 6in either direction down the inclinedportions 10 thereof and the curved hearing rail portion 5 of the hopper and the inclined portions 10 of the rail 6 are so proportioned that when the hopper has ro-lled to the end of the curved portion of the bearing rail pins 8 will engage in their respective hookshaped members 11 which are secured to the end portions of the rail 6 and the hopper will pivot on said pins 8 in the sockets 12 formed in the hooked brackets 11 and complete the dumping operation of the hopper.
As shown in F ig. 2, the brackets 11 are bifurcated and have a portion 13 extending on each side of the web portion of the rail 6, the rail being;` in the form of an I-loeam and these bifurcated portions 13 are secured to the web in any rivets 14. It will be seen on referring to F ig. 1 that the bracket 11 is rigidly secured. to the rail 6 by means of the rivets 111 as the edge portions of the bifurcated portions 13 engage the flanges of the Lbeam both at the top and bottom thereof thus forming a -very strong and rigid structure.
suitable manner as byV the upper webs of the rails 6 have been extended as shown'at 16 to partially close the member 16 and between the member 16 Y and thev rear wall of the socket referred to by the numeral 17 in Fig. 1, thus preventing theV disengagement of the pin and socket Vwhile the pivotal movement is going on or 4after the hopper has reached its final dumping position.4
Upon referring to Figs. l and 2 it will ber seen that the hook-shaped bracket 11can be reinforced in an 1 suitable manner as by the .web 18. From the foregoing description it will be seen that a rail for rolling hoppers is providedthat has socket members mount ed on the ends thereof about which the hopper Vmay pivot and which socket members are Vprovided `with guards to prevent the disengagement ofthe Vpivot pins carried by the hopper from the sockets.
`Having thus described my invention I desire to have it understood thatl do not intend to .limit myself'to the exactV details ofconstruction shown 1n the accompanying drawings or described in the foregoing Y.
specification -except as defined by the following claims:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a rail, a hopper adapted to roll on said rail from charge carrying to discharge position, coperating pivot members on said rail and hopper comprising a pin and a socket portion in which said pin is adapted to pivot, and an "overhanging guard to hold said pin in said socket when said hopper reaches its limiting dumping position. K
2. In a device of the character described, a rail having a socket member secured tothe end portion thereof, and an extension on said rail extending partially over the mouth of said socket to Vact as a guard forl the same.
3.111' a device of the character described, a rail having a socket member secured to the end portion thereof, means adapted to venter said socket and -pivot therein, and a finger extending partially over the mouth of said socket to provide a constricted entrance opening to said socket, said opening being positioned out of the normal path of movement of said means in said socket memberV as the pivoting movement is completed.
In witness whereof, I` hereunto subscribe my name this 16th day of July, A. D. 1920.
ALBERT P. LEE.
