Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 14, 1921.
Application filed April 1, 1521. Serial No. 457,609.
To all 10 [mm it may coacem Be it known that l, LAWRENCE E. Benn, States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of- Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Belt-Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in belt buckles, and the primary object thereof is to provide a buckle or fastener in which a part of the same means is employed for attaching each end of the belt to the buckle.
The invention further aims to provide a. belt buckle in which such means enables adjustable securement of one end of the belt to the buckle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a belt buckle with separable front and rear parts between which one end of the belt is secured thereby to hold the latter in fixed position.
Still further the invention aims to provide a belt buckle structure of economical form and one in which the front of the buckle may be used purely for ornamental purposes.
Other and further objectswill be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings Figure 1, is a rear side elevation of the buckle;
Fig. 2, is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; an
Fig. 4:, is a. rear side elevation of a modified form of the invention.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention a front member 1 is employed which may be ornamented on its outer face as desired. This member has inbent top and bottom flanges 2 and 3 and has secured thereto or is formed with a pair of male members ll which latter are of a size to extend through the usual holes formed in the end of a belt. These holes are spaced so that any two adjacent holes may receive the male members ff. These male members 4 have heads 5 which are used to form the male heads of snap fasteners. The rear member of the buckle consists of a plate 6 having a bail 7 011 one end to which latter is attached one end of a belt B, this end of the belt being permanently attached to the bail 7 if desired. The member 6 fits between the flanges 2 and 3 of the front member 1 so as to be held against lateral movement by these flanges. The rear member 6 is formed w th a pair of female members 8 which constitute the snap fasteners above mentioned together with the shanks 4t and heads 5 of the male members. As shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings the top and bottom edges of the rear member 6 are rolled over to form longitudinal reinforcing beads, to thereby engage the flanges 2 and 3 and effect firm securement of the rear member 6 in the position of Figs. 1 and 3.
From the above it will be seen that the front and rear members are readily separable, by merely moving same apart to disengage the snap fasteners and that upon such disengagement the belt may be removed from the wearer. In placing the belt in position, the belt is adjusted about the body, and upon the desired adjustment being effected two adjacent holes of the end B of the belt are forced over the heads 5 of the shanks l, whereupon the rear member 6 is then caused to have the female parts 8 snap into engagement with the heads 5 of the shanks a. It will thus be apparent that the shanks 4 and the heads 5 act to not only adjustably secure the end B of the belt to the buckle, but also act to secure the opposite end of the belt to the buckle by virtue of the parts 4 and 5 forming the male members for the female members 8 of the rear member of the buckle. At the same time the rear member 6 of the buckle acts to hold the end B of the belt between itself and the front member 1, and serves to prevent the end B from becoming disengaged from the shanks 4.
in Fig. iof the drawings a modification of the invention is illustrated, wherein but one snapfastener is employed, the shank of which of course, is received in but one of the holes of the end B, of the front member. In this form of the invention, the snap fastener is located central of the lengths of the front and rear members, as distinguished from the form shown in Figs. 13 wherein the two snap fasteners are located respec: tively adjacent the ends of the buckle. Otherwise the form of Fig. 4, is identical in all respects to the form in Figs. 13.
invention, what Having thus described my Let- I claim as new and desire to secure by ters Patent is a 1. A belt buckle composed of a front member having top and bottom flanges, spaced shanks secured to the front member on its rear and having heads, the shanks being formed to extend through holes in one end of the belt with the latter arranged between the flanges, and a rear member formed to have the opposite end of the belt permanently attached thereto and to engage the first named end of the belt by seating thereon, said rear member being formed to be received between the flanges of the front member and having female parts receiving the heads and the shanks and with the latter forming snap fastening means for detachingly connecting the two members and for holding the belt engaged with the front member throughout the length of the latter.
2. In a belt buckle, a front member having a pair of spaced shanks each formed with a head, the shanks being formed to extend through holes in one end of a belt, and a rear member formed to have the opposite end of the belt connected thereto and to be superimposed upon the first named end of the belt, said rear member having female parts receiving the heads and the shanks and with the same forming snap fastening means for detachably connecting the two members and for holding the belt tightly engaged with the front member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
