To whom it mayconcem: V
Medford, in the county-of Mlddlesex and State of Massachusettsy'have invented an Improvement in Paper-Cup Holders, of which the following is a speclfication.
This invention relates to cup-holders, and has for one of its objects the structural formation of the cup-holder, adapting it for holding drinking cups, particularly of the type; and has for anotherv ob'ect provision for preventing excessive chan es in the temperature of the contents of t e cup.
Paper cups usually have very thin walls and as a result the temperature of the contents of a cup will change quickly; icecream will melt and a hot drink will cool; and it is a decided advantage to avoid such changes in temperature and to maintain the contents of the cup at a more stable temperature whereby its original high degree of excellency may be maintained, at least for a short period of time.
The ordinary cup-holder having a cup receiving recess will not suflice for carrying out my invention in this particular for the wall of the cup receiving-recess permits the templeirature to pass through it easily and qu1c y.
Herein I provide the cup-holder with a closed compartment co-extensive with the cup receiving-recess, by which a dead air space or other air tight closure is provided over saidentire area, which prevents the passage through it of the temperature, or at least so retards such passage as to attain the same end.
My cu -holder also provides a supporting surface or the cup which is co-extensive with the outer surface of the cup wall thereby to,support it over all. I
Figure 1, is a side elevation and partial section of a cup-holder embodying this invention.
Fig. 2, is a plan view of the same.
The main body of the cup holder is cylindrical from top to bottom, and of various diameters throughout its length, and, as
shown, flares outwardly at the bottom, as at 10, to form a base, and is contracted above the base, as at 12, to form a waist at a point approximately where the lower end of a con- Be' it known that I, GEORGE J. BOHLMAN, -a citizen of the United'States, residing at ica cup terminates when: placed in the receivlng-recess and is flared outwardly in frusto-conical form from the waist to the top, as at 13, to provide a frusto-conical recess forjthe cup.
This main body gives to the holder its general shape or configuration.- L he cup-receiving element 14 is contained 1n the top part of the; main body;'whichis made of sheet metal and, as here shown, is of frusto-conical form, being of the same shape and of substantially the same dimen- SIODS as the cup to be held by it, so that the wall of the cup will be engaged over all by said) receiving element 14, and thus supporte y 1t.
The upper edge of the receiving element 14 may be turned over the upper edge of the main body or otherwise attached thereto, and the lower end of said receiving element may be attached to a suitable supporting element which is arranged in the base.
Said supporting element, as here shown, comprises a cylindrical hollow plug having a flaring base portion 16 and a contracted waist portion 17, conforming in shape to the shape of the base portion and waist portion of the main body, so as to fit snugly therein, and said element is arranged on the interior of said base portion, and it has a circular top 20, with a center hole 21.
The lower end of the cup-receiving element engages said top piece at the center, which is in line with the axis of a conical cup contained in the holder, so that the lower conical end-portion. of the cup may project into or through said holder.
The top piece 20 closes the lower end of the compartment or space between the receiving element 14 and the main body 13, so that from the top of the holder down to its waist portion or to the supporting element a closed compartment or dead air space isproduced.
This compartment or space effectively retards the temperature passing through the wall of the holder so that the temperature of the contents of the cup may be substantially maintained for a long period of time. The device may be provided with a handle 25, attached to the main body.
It i l e n t d th t he dead air p e with.
or closed compartment surrounds the cupreceiving element and is co-extenslve there- -It will be noted that the wall of is supported over all by the cup receiving element thereby especially adapting it-for use for a paper cup which is not self-supout substantial change in the temperaturethereof.
I claim 1. A cup-holder comprisin a flaring top portion and a frusto conica element contained therein adapted to ie ceive a cup and a supportin a center ho e,
element having a top piece with said top portion and conical Waist portion element and top piece together ,forming a closed compartment around the cup receiving portion of the holder. comprising the base portion, a contracted and a flaringtop portion, a supportin element contained in the base portion w hich extends up in to the waist portion and has a top piece with a center hole, and a frusto conical element arranged in the top portion of the main body and attached at its upper edge to the upper edge of said top portion and at its lower end to said supporting element at the center hole thereof. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
