Specification of Letters Patent.

Original application led December 26, 1913, Serial No. 808,765. Divided and this application filed September 9, 1916. Serial No. 119,154.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Voss, a citizen of the United States, residin at Davenport, in the county of Scott and tate of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This is a division of my previously filed application Serial No. 808,765, issued ,as Patent No. 1,200,278 October 3, 1916. The present invention relates to washing machines of the platform type wherein the liti washing machine tub is provided at one end thereof and the wringer being slidably mounted upon the platform so that the clothes may be wrung directly from the washing machine tub to another clothes receiving tub, or from the second tub into a third tub as the case may be, and has for its object to provide a washing and wringing mechanism suitable for driving mechanism adapted for a convenient and economical cleansing and handling of the clothes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a platform washing mechanism having a sliding wringerl adapted to assume a plurality of different positionswith respect to the platform, in combination and connection with a cylindrical washer set upon one end of the platform and with driving devices so located and arranged with respect to the wringer and the washer that they are located underneath the platform and pass upwardly at one end thereof so as to be completely out of the way of an operator engaged in the operation of wringing or washing and standing at the side of the tub, but at the same time will be eiiicacious to operate either the wringer or the washer.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a washing machine ofthe platform type, embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, showing the gear casings thereof in section.
Iig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the platform, illustrating the washingand wringing gearing as applied thereto.
Reference now being had to the accompanying drawings wherein like and .correspending parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the several views, the letter P indicates a platform having mounted upon one end thereof washing machine tub "W and slidably mounted supported at one end within the bearing 7 carried by the platform and its opposite end being adapted to be connected to the squared shaft 5 through the clutch 8. Pivotally connected to the bracket 9, carried by the platform is an operating lever 10 in the available use of the operator whereby the clutch 8 may be thrown into and out of engagement with the squared shaft 5 for a purpose which will be later described. Keyed to the power shaft 2 is a sprocket wheel 11 which 1s connected by means of a sprocket chain 12 to a large gear 13, keyed upon and carried by the squared shaft 5. From this it is obvious, that upon therotation of the shaft 2 continuous rotation will be transmitted to the squared shaft 5 through the sprocket and chain gearing as described.
Slidably mounted on the rails 111 and15 isa wringer supporting frame 16, having 'mounted thereupon the wringer R. Thie wringer is of the usual construction and has extending from one roller shaft thereof the shaft 17 carrying a gear which'is permanently in mesh with a bevel gear carried by the vertical shaft 18 and the mentioned gears are inclosed within a casing 19. The lower end of-the vertical shaft 18 carries a bevel gear which continually meshes with a pair of gears in casing 27 freely mounted upon the horizontal drive shaft 21. The drive shaft 21 is provided with a bevel gear 23, in mesh with a bevel gear 24 carried by the square shaft 5 but slidably mounted thereupon. A sleeve 25 is also slidably mounted upon the squared shaft 5 and has extending therefrom a bracket 26 which forms a bearing for the driveshaft 21. l'lllie pair of beveled gears in casing 27 which are in continuous mesh with the bevel gear on shaft 18 are adapted to be simultaneously shifted upon the movement of the casing 27 for throwingr the said bevel gears into enby the drive shaft 21, whereby the wringer rolls may be operated in either direction as connected to a foot treadle lever 30. From this it is obvious that the casing 27 maybe shifted by the foot treadle, but to provide means for shifting the same by hand a control rod 31 is provided which is connected to the foot treadle through the bell crank 32.
Carried by the platform are vertically extending angle arm supports 33, connected adjacent their upper ends by means of the angle bars 34 and carried by these angle bars are cross pieces 35 and 36 respectively. The washing machine tub 37 is made of sheet metal and is suspended from the cross pieces 35 and 36 respectively and lower end of the tub has a contour substantially the same as the outer configuration of the clothes receiving drum 38. To prevent the water from splashing from the tub during the operation of the machine, a cover 39 is pivotally mounted upon the tub and may be easily and readily swung out of the way whereby the operator may easily gain access within the tub.
To provide means for rotating the drum alternately in opposite directions, l provide a shaft 53 the same being journaled within bearings formed integrally with the gear casings 54 and 55 respectively. The lower endof the shaft 53 is provided withv a bevel gear 56 which is in mesh with a bevel gear 57 carried by the outer end of the shaft 6. The gears 56 and 57 respectively are housed within the casing 55. The u per end of the shaft 53 has loosely mountedp thereon a pair of beveled ears 58, which are in constant mesh with t e bevel gear 59 carried by shaft 60 which is journaled within a bearing formed integrally with the casing 54. The shaft 60 carries at its inner end the disk 52. The gear casing 54 is supported upon the outer face of the tub and has projected therefrom a semicircular flange which extends within the tub and forms a support for the member 50 when removing the drum from the tub. For connecting the gears 58 alternatel to the shaft 53 so that the shaft 60 may he rotated in opposite directions at predetermined intervals, a clutch 62 is keyed to the shaft 53 and is slidably mounted thereupon for engaging the clutch members carried by the bevel gears 58. A lever 63 is pivotally mounted as at 64 upon the gear casing 54 and is provided with a yoke 65 for engagement with the clutch whereby the latter may be shifted for reversing the direction of the shaft 60.
To provide means for automatically shifting the clutch 65 at predetermined intervals l provide a trip mechanism which will be herein described. Loosely mounted upon the shaft 2 is a sprocket wheel 66 connected to a sprocket wheel 67 fixed to the shaft 6 by means of the sprocket chain 68. Whereas I have shown the'sprocket wheel 66 freely mounted upon the shaft 2 it is to be understood that this shaft 2 does not transmit any motion to the sprocket wheel 66 but merely provides a support therefor. Depending from the platform is a bracket 69 having a cam lever pivotally connected thereto as at 70. Carried by the chain 68 is a roller 71 (see Fig. 2) which is adapted to ride upon. the lower face of the cam lever for operating the lever during the traveling movement of the roller 71. A stub shaft 72 is journaled within the frame and has keyed thereto a ratchet 73 at one side of the platform frame and a'cam 74 at the opposite side of the platform frame. A crank sleeve 75 is pivotally mounted upon the stub shaft carrying a pawl' 76 for engagement with the ratchet wheel and an arm being connected to the cam lever by means of the pitman link 77. When the roller 71 through its traveling motion contacts the end 78 of the cam lever the crank will be operated for moving the pawl 76 back into engagement with the next tooth carried by the ratchet 73, but when the roller 71 has engaged the free end 79 of the cam lever it will force the free end upwardly thereby turning the ratchet which in turn carries with it the cam 74 through the stub shaft 72. Pivotally connected at one end of the lever 63 is a link 8O provided at its lower end with an elongated slot 81 through which extends the shaft 72. Projecting from the outer face of the link 80 are rollers 82. From this it will be seen that upon the rotation of the shaft 72 through the trip mechanism as described the cam 74 will engage the rollers 82 and shift the link 80 in opposite directions, whereby the clutch 65 will be thrown into and out of engagement with the bevel gears 5,8 whereby the clothes receiving drum will be operated alternately in opposite directions.
Whereas I have only shown one of the rollers 71 upon the sprocket chain 60 it is of course understood that any number of these rollers may be provided as will be necessary in determining the number of times the cam .74 should be rotated for operating a clutch whereby the drum will be rotated in opposite directions.
From the particular configuration of the cam 74 it will be noted that the clutch 55 will be held out of engagement with the gears 58 a short time when changing from one to the other. When the clutch is held in this neutral position the clothes receiving-drum will be permitted4 to turn by the momentum gained during its driving rotation and before reversing its direction of rotation the drum Will come to a stop, or almost to a stop, thereby no excess load Will be thrown on the gearing in reversing the direction of rotation of the clothes receiving drum.
`Various details of the mechanism herein disclosed may be changed'and modifications may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing the efficiency of the same.
Having now described my invention, I claim:
ln a device of the class described, a platform, a horizontally arranged driven member above said platform near one end thereof, driving mechanism for said driven member, said mechanism being located beneath said platform and having a portion extending up, parallel with the outer end of said driven member, a frame movably mounted on said platform, an operated member carried by the frame, operating connections between the last named member and the driving mechanism, control mechanism operatively connected With said frame and having a pedal projecting laterally from said platform below the level thereof, to av position easily accessible to the foot of an operator so that the operator standing at the side of the machine may readily control the Working thereof, said driving mechanism for the driven member having an operating connection to the outer end of said driven member at the adjacent end of the platform Where it is out of the Way of an operator standing at the side of the platform to control the operation of the frame and driven member, substantially as described.
